Some random Deep House/Tech House after hours set

5 years ago, I was vacationing in Maui with Tony Gamboa and our respective partners. It was on this trip that I started applying for jobs in Hawaii and ended up living there for 14 months. This was set was recorded live at DT Fleming Beach on a beautiful Sunday. I originally used this mix for a limited edition mixtape that went along with the release of coffee collaboration with Strigo Coffee and it is the first time I have posted this mix anywhere myself. Hope you enjoy.

Fresh Brewed (Live in Maui 09/30/2018)

In October of 1993, I released the first Cybersex mix. I listened to the mix over the weekend and tried to collect my memories of recording and releasing this mix when I was 19. I had been DJing raves for about a year and half at that point and new genres and sub-genres were coming pretty frequently. I had started to realize with mixtapes, you could go anywhere musically. Without having to concern myself with a dance floor I could just play and mix music that I enjoyed. I honestly just wanted to be different. There were plenty of house DJs and there were plenty of harder techno DJ’s but there was a sound that was emerging that I was getting into. Some called it Armchair Techno. The first Artificial Intelligence compilation was kind of the starting point for me getting into that sound. I was enjoying music by Black Dog, B-12, Ken Ishii, Orbital, Aphex Twin, Sun Electric and the like. The memories are a bit fuzzy but I remember I was into this book about the future of technology that was was published by WIRED Magazine. In that book was some images that I would use for several of my mixtapes. In the book there was a still image of the cybersex scene from “The Lawnmower Man” and that is what I stuck with when thinking about the music I was listening to. To me it was electronic but it had a sensuality to it, and plus it felt futuristic. So that was the name and image that stuck for this new mixtape I was doing. I typically don’t plan my mixes but I do go in with an idea and a direction.I had the tracks I wanted selected but it was pretty stream of consciousness in how it was mixed. I recorded it in my bedroom at my Mom’s house on two 1200’s and Gemini PDM-6012 Mixer straight to a Sony DAT recorder. I do remember getting very positive feedback from the mix at the time. After listening to it this past weekend, I do feel it holds up well for a 30 year old mix. In 2018, I had all the Cybersex mixes remastered for the special Cybersex 25 Mixtape pack that came out to celebrate the 25th anniversary with this mix. This is the first time I posted this remaster anywhere. I hope you enjoy it.

Thee-O started DJing at the young age of 13 and by the time he was 18 in 1992, he started DJing in the thriving underground rave scene of Southern California. He has created a name for himself while changing genres and staying true to his integrity, committing to what he feels is the best in underground dance music. His consistency of skillful mixing and lively scratching has cemented “his sound” regardless of what genres co-mingle in his style.

In addition to his DJing, Thee-O is also an accomplished producer and remixer that have landed tracks on Bedrock, Suara, Perfecto, Looq, Drops and System Recordings to name just a few. His approach to music production mimics his DJing artistry in the aspect that genre comes second over the feeling of the music. Genres and styles are split, shattered and then reformed into songs that work on multiple dance floors.

Recently, he was DJing and producing with Robert Pointer (AKA Robtronik) under the name Stylus. Stylus is also responsible for some of the most engaging events to occur in Los Angeles . Their events have occurred in amazing venues such as King King in the heart of Hollywood, The Standard Rooftop in downtown LA and Los Globos in the trendy Silverlake area, while attracting international talent of both House and Techno to join in on the fun. Thee-O also continues to work with the LA Based "re:love" crew to plan and execute the legendary park parties as well as pushing the brand to extend itself into new venues and opportunities.

As of January 2019, Thee-O has relocated to Honolulu. He is already DJing on the islands and has played for events at venues like Nextdoor and Hawaiian Brian’s as well as the Tropical Oasis Retreat in Maui. While he is on the islands, the slower pace of life will allow him to work on music with less distractions and should increase his output. 

While a lot can be talked about when it comes to “Old School,” Thee-O walks the walk. He has accomplished a lot in his 24 years of being a DJ, producer and promoter and he is just getting started. He remains wildly popular while staying firmly planted into the underground scene and not falling into the hype that can surround the current EDM culture. With a new island home, new ventures, new branding, new tracks, and new ideas, the future is going to be one for the books with lots more to come from this music innovator.
