Sometimes in soul music history it has seemed that record producers couldn't get enough of a certain backing track, churning out singles after another, chasing for a hit that never came. The latter doesn't really apply to Pratt & Moody's "Lost Lost Lost", which just recently broke 1 million Youtube plays. While stacking up fame in the lowrider soul scene, this beat ballad also caught the ear of the West Coast record collector and dj Mike Noriega, who decided to write fresh lyrics to accompany its instrumental.

"Wondering" that came as a result was brought to life by the singer and industry insider Gerald McCauley, who turned his soul inside out for the performance. In the past McCauley has worked as a musician, A&R man for example in a project involving George Benson and Al Jarreau and even produced a book and documentary on the history of the Fender Rhodes electric piano. Here he slips comfortably into the Cold Diamond & Mink groove, squeezing every drop of heartache on tape.

This version continues the story of "Lost Lost Lost" so gracefully that one can only wonder, if there are more to come. Who will be the next poor soul to sink into this deceivingly blissful bed of roses, filled with piano, drums and slide guitar?

FatGyver is back – and funkadelia in hip hop is not dead.
Enter the sample-laden hiphop–funk–downtempo realm of the Finland-based producer and Phatventures co-boss, FatGyver.
While one half (or two thirds?) of “hiphop” producers seems to hug the ever-growing hype around 808 and trap basslines, there’s another half cherishing the passion for their beloved MPCs, SPs, and other lo-fi beatmaking machines, leaning towards the aesthetics that were largely created and pushed to their peak in the 90s. 
Fashion comes and goes, while style stays – after all, it’s not like The Ramones ever changed much, either, as their recipe simply worked – and the same can be said about hip hop. It’ll always be there, and even if it’s not necessarily enjoying the overground limelight, there’s a healthy culture strong as ever still banging their beatboxes and appreciating the more soulful, smokey, and jazzy atmospheres in the underground.
The title is a half-funny, half-serious poke at how hip hop of this nature has steered away from the mainstream spotlight along the years – willingly or not.
No Commercial Potential is an album that lends vibes from both funk and soul as well as film noir, contributing to a plenty of crossover appeal, whether you’re a true hip hop lover or just a casual listener who enjoys music that finds ways of resonating in your musical braincells.

Smoke and Glass by Alex Hass & Bill Laswell

The collaboration between musician/artist Alex Haas and bassist/producer Bill Laswell is an homage to the organized chaos and flux of their changing city. NYC has been their creative muse since the late 70’s when they met, working their way up in the music business and recording in studios such as Media Sound and Power Station. Their first session together, with Alex as assistant engineer and Bill producing, was for Bootsie Collins’ deep pocket dub funk - a precursor to the duos mutual styles and musical symbiosis.


Over the years, the two producers went on to work with a bucket list of whose who, including David Bowie, PIL, The Ramones, Prince, Brian Eno and MotorHead, assisting on Grammy winning sessions for U2’s “All That You Can Leave Behind” and Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven.” While they worked diligently on crafting superb work for marquee acts, they also made time to hone in on their own serious yet approachable hybrid of Ambient Dub, World, Jazz and 90’s Trip Hop. “Nostalgia is in fashion at the moment, with a definite resurgence of interest in the 90’s,” Haas asserts. “I never stopped liking that era.”


Smoke and Glass is their sophomore release, following up 2018’s Nowstalgia. The majority of the new album was recorded at Treehouse Studios in Paris as well as all around NYC and in restaurants in Morocco and living rooms and kitchens in South East Asia. The recordings pull from a variety of musical influences, from Sly and Robbie to Miles Davis. But the dominating style is clearly the innovative British Trip Hop pioneered by bands like Massive Attack, who melded their influences into a distinctly urban vibe.
