This track is also originally from 2010. The 2021 remix was mainly concerned with tweaking relative levels to improve the presence of some of the synth harmonies. I also used EQuivocate to remove some resonance in one of the synths. I replaced SDRR with Satin and then mastered using the same chain as the original piece, but using slightly different settings. This is due for release in 2022.

This was written in Spring 2014, and remixed in September 2021. I made a few minor panning adjustments, tweaked the EQ settings for all instruments, using EQuivocate to clean up a couple of resonant hotspots. I made a few minor levelling adjustments and replaced FerricTDS with Satin on the master bus. The track was then mastered in T-Racks5. It's a Berlin-school piece of sequencing with the addition of some oriental sounds.

Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.

Step 2: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Background: Longtime participants in, and observers of, the Disquiet Junto series will recognize this single-sentence assignment as the very first Disquiet Junto project, the same one that launched the series on the first Thursday of 2012. Revisiting it a year and two years later, on the first Thursdays of 2013 and 2014, provided a fitting way to begin the new year. Now, at the start of the fourth year of the Disquiet Junto, it is a tradition. A weekly project series can come to overemphasize novelty, and it’s helpful to revisit old projects as much as it is to engage with new ones. Also, by its very nature, the Disquiet Junto suggests itself as a fast pace: a four-day production window, a weekly habit. It’s beneficial to step back and see things from a longer perspective.

This took 10 hours to record in May 2010. The June 2012 Edit/Remix/Master took a further 14 hours, of which a great proportion  was spent tweaking the sonics. Only two synths, a drum sampler and some reverb were used on here.

Here is a recent "remix" of Tears in Rain. There are some adjustments to the volume automation on the outro, which tidied things up a little. The main change here was the removal of two internal EQs on the main (non-pulsing) synth and its reverb. I also took the opportunity to ease off on the surgical EQ settings used in EQuivocate on the same synth/reverb channels, using them as a more traditional HP/LP EQ. I used the same mastering, but cut the output levelling a little. The resulting sound features a little more HF content, giving the new mix a "colder" sound than the original, which seems quite appropriate given the recent change in the weather here.

Solutions to Non-Existent Problems

Tears in Rain (2018 Frost Mix)

3 arpeggios recorded from Moog Grandmother, with lots of built in spring reverb. The recorded arpeggios are played back in multiple layers of loops, at different rates, to emulate varispeed tape recording techniques used in "classic" electronic music.

No digital effects used. One of the goals was to explore recording spring reverbs, which have a fixed decay rate, and them play them back at lower rates to extend the decay time.

10 hours to record in August 2010, the 2013 Edit/Remix/Master took 9 hours, most of which was concerned with tweaking the percussion. The actual mixing and mastering was relatively straightforward.

I changed one of the synth parts and remixed and remastered it in 2020. No real problems encountered apart from a couple of renamed instruments in the original project files.
