We’ve been big fans of the Sunrise Sessions for a while now. The monthly mixes, curated by Oslo based Plastic Fantastic have become one of our favourite destinations for eclectic and downtempo music so its a real honour to host one of their mixes here on The Electric Disco.

Plastic Fantastic is the alias of DJ and producer John Clements. Originally formed as a duo with Eirik Wulff-Engh in 2012, Eirik decided to step away from the partnership in 2020 leaving John to continue Plastic Fantastic as a solo project.

The project has had a number of releases on some of the most highly regarded labels in the scene including Aficionado, Balearic Social and Nu Northern Soul, and this mix is a perfect reflection of their output, taking in moments of Ambient, World, New Wave, Jazz and Funk.

It’s a superb selection, we’ve had it on repeat for the last couple of weeks and we’re sure you’ll love it too..

After the stunning mix we got from Plastic Fantastic earlier this year we were over the moon to get a message saying he had another mix in the pipeline for us, this time it was a reworking of a tape originally put together back in 2002.

It perfectly captures that late 90's / early 00's cafe vibe that we love so much and like the last mix has been on repeat here since it arrived!

In John's own words...

"I recently found an old mixtape of mine, which, according to the hand-scribbled label, I compiled back in the summer of 2002. Aside from the questionable mixing and some rather obvious track selections, I still found it to be quite an enjoyable listen. 

The sound quality of the recording was pretty dreadful after all these years, so I decided to re-record it, painstakingly recreating the mix as closely and as accurately as I could - Staying true to the original vibe, but with the added benefit of today's digital technology. 

Very much a labour of love, I'm pleased to share this mixtape with The Electric Disco. Hope you enjoy it! "

Stefano and Leo are the brains behind Disco Outcasts and are rapidly becoming legends both at home in manchester with their ever popular nights at The Purple Pussy Cat, but also further afield, with international bookings taking them to Ibiza, Croatia, across Europe and on a tour of the US and Canada which they’ve got lined up for next year.

Their sound is truly eclectic and just what we love over here at The Electric Disco, taking in Italo, Cosmic, Afro, Boogie, Balearic, House and much more…

Well another week and another fantastic mix has landed in The Electric Disco mailbox.

This time we’ve got Paul Williams aka baleariksoul in the driving seat and he’s put together a fantastic selection of Balearic gems both new and old.

We’ve been big fans of the baleariksoul mixes for some time so we’re honoured to feature Discoteca Pt 2 here at The Electric Disco.
Looking to find out a bit more about the man behind these awesome mixes we delved into Pauls Last FM bio page and this paragraph just leapt out at us and sums everything up perfectly…

“Paul is an acknowledged musical historian. Historian might suggest someone living in the past. But you must understand the past to appreciate the future. Paul surely does this with his music. Playing modal jazz next to Claussell`s Spiritual Life releases. Dub reggae alongside Techno`s minimal reductions.

Some might be so obsessed with the future that the past is ignored. Others so stuck in the “good old bad old” days that life has stopped. Mr Williams isn’t afraid to be caught dancing to a Mungolian Jetset production. Likewise, he don’t care if you see him raise his arms aloft as the needle drops on “Stop Bajon”.”

Andrew has been involved in music in one way or another for most of his life, primarily as a record collector and DJ, but recently has rapidly and deservedly also gained a reputation as a top notch producer, responsible for some of the best disco and rock edits being turned out on what seems like a weekly basis.

We’ve been looking forward to getting one of his mixes for some time and this one is a real gem from start to finish and we’re happy to be sharing it with you.

This mix dates back to 1992 and is one of several that were bought directly from the Cafe’s DJ booth.  It was one of an incredible series of mixes that we collected over the course of the summer, all recorded at sunset, live from the cafe.

The mixes were each simply labeled with a number and by the end of the year we’d managed to get hold of either original or fairly decent copies of most of them.

Sadly at the time I don’t think we realised the importance or relevance these mixes would have in years to come and most are now long gone, so I’m glad this particular tape has just about stood the test of time as it was a favourite back then and just listening to the opening few tracks for the first time in over 10 years brings it all flooding back!

The mix was recorded on 2 x CDJ’s, Mackie digital mixer using traktror skratch to conform at 3am on 14th October after a few lagers.  Mastered and encoded in Logic the following morning, still with a glass of wine in-hand.

To coincide with the awesome interview that The Project Club did for us this month, Steve has kindly put together this mix to give us a further taste of what they are all about and also what you might expect to hear down at the hugely successful Mondo Disco or Balearica nights that he runs in East London.

It’s a wonderful mix of downtempo balearic lushness, chilled electronica and quality house and we’ve been listening to it non stop since it arrived here at The Electric Disco so we think you’re going to like it too!
