I was thrilled when Mrs. Rowe gave me the opportunity to arrange this song for the Jazz Band this year. I wrote it in May of 2019, under the influence of a blend of Jazz and hip-hop which I was listening to at the time, and it was first recorded and released by the Extension Chords at MECA studios in Portland that summer. 

If you listen to the original (on our recent album: "Lucky"), you'll notice that this song uses a pretty simple motif which builds in intensity from beginning to end. I didn't want to change that when I began arranging for the Jazz Ensemble, so my primary focus was on creating counter melodies to enhance my motif from section to section. 

The logistics of performing "Pulp" became much more complicated in march when our fear of leaving school for good became a reality. I created the score and parts for this piece in a software called Finale, so I was luckily able to work with Mrs. Rowe on distributing parts and having band members record themselves individually to be compiled later. The recording  you hear above was compiled and mixed in Ableton, and features solos from Lincoln Pierce (Trumpet) and Danila Boredanko (Saxophone). Enjoy!

Pulp - Performed by the CHRHS Jazz Band (2020)

The Extension Chords are a jazz trio comprised of keyboardist Myles Kelley, Bassist Katherine Bowen, and Drummer Owen Markowitz. The three started playing together in late 2017 and have since performed regular at gigs between midcoast Maine and Portland.
