Face-to-Face is the podcast which pairs creative people with the legends who’ve inspired them.

In Episode One, Raye and Mutya Buena sit down to discuss mental health, social media, the toxic side of the music industry and the genius of Doja Cat.

Since releasing her first EP in 2014, Raye has worked with the likes of Stormzy, Mabel, David Guetta, Charli XCX and Beyoncé. But last summer, the London musician took to Twitter to publicly call out her record label, claiming that she’d been signed for a four-album deal in 2014, but hadn’t yet been allowed to release a single album. She also said that her songs were either “sat in folders collecting dust” or being given to other artists. In July this year, Raye struck out as an independent artist with the no-holds-barred single Hard out Here, following it up with the melancholic dance track Black Mascara. 

In Episode One of Face-to-Face, Raye sits down with the legendary Mutya Buena – an original member of the Sugababes. The trio formed in 1998 and released their first One Touch album two years later. One Touch spawned three Top 20 singles, but the Sugababes were dropped by their label. They went on to score number one hits including Freak Like Me, Round and Round, Hole in the Head and Push The Button.

Buena left the Sugababes in 2005. She reunited with original members Keisha Buchanan and Siobhán Donaghy in 2012, and they dropped the single Flatline the following year. In 2022, with ‘00s nostalgia at its peak, the Sugababes drew such a big crowd at Glastonbury that the whole Avalon Field had to be shut down. They hit the road this autumn.

Face-to-Face: Sugababes' Mutya Buena & Raye

Face-to-Face is the podcast which pairs creative people with the legends who’ve inspired them.

In this episode, London writer Gabriel Krauze meets Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh. Like Welsh, Krauze's debut novel was long-listed for the Booker Prize. Who They Was, published in 2020, is an autobiographical novel about juggling an English degree with a criminal lifestyle that involves robbery, drug dealing and serious violence. Krauze has also written short stories for THE FACE. 

Welsh was born in Scotland, and he grew up in housing schemes in Edinburgh. In 1977, he moved to London to embrace the punk scene. He wrote his first book Trainspotting in the late ’80s. The Trainspotting film was released in 1996, and it’s widely recognised as an era-defining classic. Welsh has written at least 13 novels, four short story collections, 10 screenplays and two theatre productions. 

During their Face-to-Face conversation, Krauze and Welsh discuss parallels between punk and grime, their shared passion for boxing and their resentment towards the literary establishment.

LA-via-Atlanta artist ABRA threw a party at Sweeties in The Standard London.

The featuring DJ sets from Sherelle, former THE FACE cover star PinkPantheress, Lil C, Alexis plus a live performance by George Riley.

Hovering around the 160bpm mark, Sherelle's set was an adrenaline-fuelling blast through d’n’b, euphoric breaks, ghetto tech, electro, pop and a particularly mangled cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Face-to-Face is the podcast which pairs creative people with the legends who’ve inspired them. In Episode 5, the musician and skateboarder Mrley meets The Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones.

Mrley released his debut EP, Love You London, in 2021. He appeared in the TV series Pistol, which told the intense story of The Sex Pistols. The series was directed by Danny Boyle and adapted from Steve Jones’s memoir Lonely Boy.

Steve Jones was born in 1955. In the early to mid '70s, Jones became involved in the countercultural scene surrounding Malcom McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s clothing shop on London’s Kings Road. The Sex Pistols formed 1975 with Jones, John Lydon, Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock, who was later replaced by Sid Vicious.

During their Face-to-Face conversation, Mrley and Steve discuss the Pistol TV show, McLaren and Westwood’s vision for punk fashion and London’s best pie shops.

As part of The 1975’s takeover of The Face, we’ve released a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes.

Mike Kinsella is a prolific, cult, cornerstone figure in emo. The Chicago native’s bands include Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls and American Football – bands have inspired the more tender side of Healy’s songwriting. The admiration goes both ways: Kinsella recently covered his favourite ’75 song, Me.

In this podcast, Kinsella and Healy discuss the pre-internet landscape of indie rock, the mutating definition of the term “emo”, and whether or not the American will make more music with his brother and bandmate Tim. Along the way, Kinsella shares a story about his mum baking a cake for Fugazi, while Healy hints at reprising Drive Like I Do, the heavier band that were the teenage precursor The 1975.

Kim Gordon was a founding member of Sonic Youth, the New York band who tore apart the rules of how rock music should be played. Since their split in 2011, Gordon has performed as half of experimental guitar duos Body/Head and Glitterbust, written the bestselling book Girl in a Band and, last year, released her first solo album, No Home Record. She’s also dedicated her time to art, film and political activism. 

In this podcast, Gordon discusses NYC’s No Wave scene, her career in art, dealing with depression through writing, her passion for film and politics, and being “freaked out” by modern pop culture.

It’s hard to exaggerate the all-round cultural significance of Brian Eno. 

He’s a producer, conceptual artist and theorist who pioneered the ambient genre and the idea of generative music. In a five-decade career, this one-time member of Roxy Music and lifelong experimentalist has collaborated with multiple artists including David Bowie, Talking Heads, Devo and U2, helping them all expand their musical horizons.

He’s also a famously nice bloke. And, it turns out, he’s a big admirer of The 1975.

In this podcast, Healy and Eno express their admiration for each other’s work and dissect the concepts behind ambient music and abstract art, the exciting potential of gaming, the sly wit of Bowie, and the difficult task of making decent political music.

Brian Eno and Matty Healy in conversation

As part of The 1975’s takeover of The Face, we’ve released a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes.

Bobby Gillespie is the frontman of Primal Scream and the former drummer with The Jesus and Mary Chain. 

After growing tired of being a straight-up indie band – and, frankly, with nothing left to lose – in 1989 the Scotsman enlisted the help of DJ/producer Andrew Weatherall. 

The result was the groundbreaking blend of psychedelia, dub, funk and acid house that is the Scream’s classic 1991 album Screamadelica.

In the years since, Gillespie’s restless rock’n’roll spirit has continued to explore multiple genres – and, like Healy after him, he’s pushed the boundaries of how a bunch of guys in a band can sound.

In this podcast, Gillespie and Healy debate the current state of rock music, authenticity in music and art, and the legacy and legend of the mighty Weatherall.

It goes without saying that Healy was honoured to speak to the singer, songwriter, poet, and all-round Fleetwood Mac frontwoman. The feeling, luckily, was mutual – it turns out that Nicks is a massive fan of The 1975.

Nicks talks about the intense emotional (and chemical) cocktails that have fuelled much of Fleetwood Mac’s material, her feeling of sisterhood with bandmate Christine McVie, and her spiritual connection with late friends and heroes Prince and Tom Petty. Healy and Nicks also discuss going sober, poetry and creative chemistry. It is, frankly, a love-in.
