Episode 2: Impurity

First up on the guest mix is Impurity aka Matty P aka the Scouse Rembrandt. Matty is an OG bass head who gets a little too excited by The Bug and has most likely thrown a cup of piss in a Coki crowd. Typically known for his dark, moody taste in drum and bass, dubstep and jungle, his music taste is originally inspired by metal, punk, noise and all things downcast (u can tell he used to be a bit of a goth). Regularly playing at legendary bass party Version and guest at a range of low end oriented parties across Berlin and further over the years, Impurity his earned a name as unspoken legend in the scene, in addition to a string of unique and weighty releases on Cead and Of Paradise and recently his own label Foreign Body.

Matty was part of the initial wave of inspiration to show alternative ends to established DJs musical palettes as we spent a few too many hours going b2b, and there’s few people i’d rather mix with and have on the show. 

Matty has managed to weave together all ends of his musical vision, merging his top tier selection of dnb and jungle through a range of italo, ambient, noise, punk, metal, indie, classical and reggae while maintaining his organic tone and showing no set tempo.

maquis son sistèm est un projet musical et alias de stefan dubs qui s’exprime à travers les disques du label éponyme, une émission sur lyl radio : le son du maquis et un live dub qui consiste en une ré-interprétation des morceaux au format k7 en utilisant le multi-piste comme instrument narratif mais aussi les eﬀets sonores et dub sirens. il fait aussi partie du comité des fêtes qui organise des nuits sound system dans un atelier partagé à toulouse et du projet de disquaire casemate record shop dans ce mix il pioche dans plusieurs univers qui se rapportent à la musique dub et y sélectionne des morceaux avec lesquels il résonne en ce moment pour essayer de faire une sélection chaleureuse, généreuse et riche en sonorités.

Weirdness and detail. This is all I want as a listener and a dancer, and what I want to convey as Ikävä Pii. In this mix I’ve explored slowfast ambiguity, music for ponds and futuristic punk, pairing Italian Sunitty with warped UK techno, with a couple of WTF turns.

For the most part, it is extremely detailed music. It’s abstract and rich. I don’t like the definition of “sound design” anymore: it sounds “functional”, as if the goal was creating a product. These producers are (like me), instead, trying to spawn detailed worlds.

I’ve started making music with a punk band in Puglia. I picked up a guitar because my father and all his brothers played. Family gatherings were beautifully loud. Puglia was still a poor and tough place when I was a kid, so my love for international music was a form of escapism. I was (like many others) online a lot and in touch with musicians from all over the world. I started dreaming of London listening to The Clash at maybe 12yo? London has truly shaped me, I was radicalised here. Politically and artistically. And here’s where I embraced my queerness.

I think, in many instances, it was here that I was exposed to some really fringe stuff, and that’s how I realised I loved everything that was genuinely weird or boundaries-pushing. Furthermore, I believe that Hackney Wick makes my life as an artist easier. Cheap rent, community and proximity: it’s a 5 mins walk from the warehouse to the studio and the venue, and sometimes special things only happen thanks to the support of other locals. You know who you are! <3

Niche started in April 2023 as a monthly sonic hangout; noisy jams, open decks, and improvised sets. Now it’s a full-scale event, with performances by some of the best artists we know. It started out of necessity: an accessible space to experiment with fellow noisemakers. 
My relationship with the venue was crucial; I’ve been a resident at The Bath House for 2 years now, and Niche can only happen because my studio is there.

It is a lovely ecosystem of musicians, DJs, listeners and dwellers. We are trying to bridge the gap between the bedroom and the venue, offering a space for people to try new things out and take risks, playing for the most understanding audience. In terms of curation, I am looking for the most daring acts out there - no genre limitations, but definitely priority to live shows, and musicians in particular. 
Alongside artists I know and/or follow, we met incredibly talented people through the open calls, or other nice folks who just jumped on the groupchat and asked to play! Keeping it as open and diverse as possible is at the core of our practice. We only have one resident at the moment - the amazing Queenie.
