Working on opposite sides of the landmass we call Canada, Vancouver/Montreal duo Potatohead People (producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical) have been making waves for quite some time with their signature jazzy boom-bap meets boogie inside the bassbin vibes. Called a “formidable tandem” by OkayPlayer, their sounds have been championed early on by the likes of Kaytranada, Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, Exmag, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg. After a few early releases on Vancouver based netlabel Jellyfish Recordings, Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz reissued their 2012 landmark Kosmichemusik EP and pressed a 7” which quickly became a collector’s item. The association landed their song “Back To My Sh*t” (featuring Frank Nitty of Frank’n’Dank) on a Powerade produced LeBron James documentary and Nick and Astro began working on a debut LP for Bastard Jazz, presented here.

Big Luxury draws from influences disparate as classic jazz, prog rock, disco, 90’s hip-hop, DJ Shadow-Era downtempo beats, alongside modern influences like the Brainfeeder crew and new electronic movements coming out of Nick Wisdom’s adopted hometown of Montreal.  What’s resulted is a finely honed, extra buttery album that effortly glides between tempos, but never loses the mood.  The album also features a whole host of guest vocalists -  J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J, legendary Canadian MC Moka Only, New Zealand’s Sorceress, and Amalia all provide contributions to the sounds within.  The album will set the tone for the duo’s big moves this year, including forthcoming collaborations with Illa J and Pomo as well as tour dates in North America and beyond. 

Big Luxury is a velvety ride through vibes and a magnificent debut for these talented young Canadians.

Almost every musician wants to make a record no one expects from them, and yet few working bands bottle this wanderlust in a way that both carries who they have been while staying true to their destination. Nicolay (from Grammy-nominated duo The Foreign Exchange) once again combines forces with jazz trio The Hot At Nights - Chris Boerner, Matt Douglas, and Nick Baglio - for another musical exploration since their 2012 tour of Shibuya Session EP. “Now The Coast Is Clear” captures all of the lessons of a band that has spent years expanding in experience, all while maintaining voracious appetites for new sounds, deeper style palates, and denser stories. You can hear influences from both sides of the aisle informing this track: the subtle jam heave of their Three Kids album (itself an amalgam of genre bends), flashes of all three of Nicolay’s City Lights sessions, the vast headspace of years of road life…it all simmers in this song. In a time when it’s easy to sink into the negativity of political malaise and nearly global despair, this single leans hard into contemplative hope, and the album that follows will surely stand as a testimony of necessary change to come. It also got picked up for the soundtrack for "Our Family Wedding". This was a cool collab and is just the first of many w Jose. He has joint on my Early Riser LP and I'm writing a new tune for his next record.

8 Miles To Moenart has literally brought Tall Black Guy full circle. Detroit was where he
started making music, and it’s to his hometown he returns to draw inspiration for his
debut album. Taking in low-slung hip hop, downtempo house and jazz-tinged street soul,
it’s a record of rare focus. Largely instrumental, he’s also added some choice collabs
with Ozay Moore (formerly known as Othello) and Diggs Duke, bringing their own
unique styles to the melting pot. This record encapsulates the musical heritage
of Detroit, through the looking glass of Tall Black Guy's own signature sound.

Representative of how the Internet can aid in creating music, the Foreign Exchange started when Little Brother rapper Phonte heard a beat on Okayplayer.com by Dutch producer Nicolay and asked if he could lay some vocals over it. Nicolay agreed, and the song "Light It Up" appeared shortly after as the B-side to Little Brother's 2002 single "Whatever You Say." Relying mainly on instant messaging and email, the duo continued to work together, with Nicolay sending beats to Phonte, who would add vocals and send them back until they had enough tracks together to form an album. Not once during the entire process of making their debut, Connected, which came out in 2004, did the members of the Foreign Exchange speak over the phone or in person. Due in part to an increasing production load, Nicolay moved to the States, and Leave It All Behind, the second FE album -- more R&B-oriented than the debut -- was recorded. Released in 2008 and featuring a handful of stunning videos, its lead single, "Daykeeper," was nominated for a 2010 Grammy in the category of Best Urban/Alternative Performance (and lost to India.Arie's "Pearls"). After assisting two of their associates, YahZarah (The Ballad of Purple St. James) and Zo! (SunStorm), with albums, the Foreign Exchange released Authenticity. All three albums were issued in 2010 through The Foreign Exchange Music. A DVD/CD set, Dear Friends: An Evening with the Foreign Exchange (2011) and a two-disc set of remixes and new songs titled The Reworks (2013) preceded the group's fourth studio album, Love in Flying Colors.
