Suddenly Last Summer (The Motels cover)

This was my very first composition that I ever wrote.  I cleaned up the sound as best as I could as I don't have the original source recording anymore.  This was taken from a 320kb. MP3 recording of it.  I tweaked the EQ and jacked up the overall gain by around 7 decibels as I had plenty of headroom to use.

House Of Wax (Paul McCartney cover)

This was taken from an hour-long practice "rehearsal" thing that I recorded a couple of days ago.  It was mostly just to noodle around and play some stuff that I knew and to also put down some musical ideas and riffs, just to frame them for posterity to come back to later.  I started fumbling around with this track and started playing it from what I could remember of it.  I first heard this track on a compilation called "Who's Missing" which is a great compilation all the way around.  I got it way back in the mid 1990's when I didn't know that much about the Who apart from the stuff we all know of.  It's a great song and it was really awesome to see Pete dust this off for the Bridge School shows that they did a while back.

Probably my most ambitious recording project to date, there's even a guitar solo! haha....Soloing has always been Calculus & Trigonometry all rolled into one.  For the curious....8 tracks were used.....one for lead guitar, one for the clipped rhythm guitar, one for "bass" guitar (my regular guitar's E bass string through a bass patch), one for the looped drum track, one for the MIDI in from my Piano, and three vocal tracks (one main and two backing vocals panned left and right).  It's a cool thing to bring all of that together at the end and trying to mix and match levels as best you can and still leave a little headroom up top.  Each recording does teach me a few things and lessons that I can take with me.

My last upload of the year and it'll probably be my last cover for a while...I need to focus on original material.  This is one of my favorites from Burma, I had a lot of fun doing this up.

Einstein's Day (Mission Of Burma cover)

Another one from the archives, this was a short romp on the piano.  I was lucky enough to see Thom Yorke play the live debut of this song in Cleveland, Ohio in 2001 during a Radiohead concert.  They were supporting the release of "Amnesiac" of which this song closed the album in a starkly different version then what was presented that night in Ohio.  The original studio version was done with a reversed backing track including reversed backing vocals by Yorke.  

Like Spinning Plates (2004 Recording - Radiohead cover)

This is one of my absolute favorite songs ever.  I saw Brian and his band play this during the Smile Tour of 2004-2005 in Ann Arbor, MI.  Unforgettable night and an unforgettable song.  The Piano was recorded properly straight into the computer via a piano patch and the vocals done a day later.  I had grand plans to include horns, drums and glockenspiel (I actually had one of these at this time) but I never got around to it.

Surf's Up (2004 Recording - Brian Wilson / Beach Boys cover)

This was one of the first times I ever used an audio interface.  As you can hear on this recording, I had no clue yet about fading tracks in and out as every guitar overdub was very abrupt and much louder than the main track.

10:15 Saturday Night (2004 Recording - The Cure cover)

This was done up a few days ago and it was sadly the last recording I'll ever make with my acoustic as the headstock broke off on June 10th :-(.  Don't know if I'll get it fixed yet or not...I recorded this live with guitar and vocals.  I'm trying to read the lyrics as I try to sing, not a good idea..haha.

Point Of View (Silverchair cover - rehearsal recording)

My first recorded original in about ten years, this one is my first with actual lyrics.  This tuning is low.....very low and very unorthodox, but it works for this song and the subject matter.  I sort of did a Henry Rollins and half-spoke the lyrics versus singing them because I can't do Tom Waits, haha.

I was one of the lucky ones to get an Iphone 6 Plus recently.  This was done up on the iOS version of Garageband.  I wanted to test out the sound of recording with the phone, just in case I wanted to record something while I'm out and about.  This is two tracks....one track of acoustic guitar and one track of vocals.  I didn't really care about accuracy of playing or singing as this was purely a test of the portable version of Garageband.  I have to say that I think it sounds pretty good considering the source.

This was taken from a cassette I made back in 2005 and the sound reflects that.  I do plan on fixing this up down the road but with so many stretches and fluctuations on the tape, it's going to take a while.

I've played guitar off-and-on since 1994, didn't really get into actually learning until 2003.  That's also the same year that I started learning piano.  I picked up a bass in 2004 which I sadly don't own anymore.  All basslines in my songs are played on my electric guitar's top 4 strings and put through a bass patch. 

My current setup is as follows:  A Fender acoustic guitar, A Stedman Pro electric guitar, a Yamaha DGX-500 Grand Piano keyboard (thanks to my brother for getting me this as a gift back in the day), An M-Audio Fast Track Pro 2X2 Audio Interface, An M-Audio Duo MIDI-USB Interface for my Keyboard, Two Mic Stands (one large + one small), An Audio-Technica microphone for vocals, A Radio Shack condensor microphone for miking acoustic guitar, and finally my Mac laptop running Garageband to bring it all together.  Garageband also supplies me with the drum tracks I need as I lack a drummer or even real drums to play.

Dopey covers will be afoot as well as original sketches and a few archaic demos from years gone by...
