FIRST TIME IN NYC @ APT 21.10.05 (greg wilson live mix)

This is the recording from my first ever appearance in New York. The gig was arranged to launch my Credit To The Edit compilation Stateside – it was at APT in the Meatpacking District on October 21st 2005.

Most people presumed that I’d been to NYC previously, a fair assumption given the influence the city has had on me, particularly via the black / dance music of the early 80’s, which provides a defining aspect of my DJ career, but this was not only my first time there, but my first time in the US (my first time on another continent now I come to think of it). 

I was made to feel very welcome though, and there were lots of NYC DJ’s in attendance that night – as I mentioned in the accompanying text for the ‘I Was A Teenage DJ’ download (http://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/teenage-dj-aka-greg-wilson-i/) Rug N Tug’s support for the track had turned it into one of the hottest underground tunes over there ahead of my arrival. It was hardly The Beatles stepping onto American soil at JFK in Feb ‘64 with their record at the top of the charts, but I felt that the ‘Teenage DJ’ track had helped prime things nicely for my US debut.

A former New York DJ who came to see me was Barry Lederer, who’d once played a hugely influential role as Billboard’s Disco columnist back in the 70’s, taking over from the great Tom Moulton (Barry was also co-owner of Graebar Sound, the company who installed the sound systems at venues including The Saint and 12 West). He’d planned to be accompanied by his friend Mel Cheren, a true pioneer of the Disco era, who owned the Paradise Garage as well as West End Records. Barry extended apologies for the no show from Mel, who wasn’t well, and we talked about hooking up during my next visit. However, it sadly wasn’t to be as Mel died in 2007, before my return. Just six months later Barry too was no longer with us. When I’d heard the sad news of his passing I played Jimmy Ruffin’s ‘Tell Me What You Want’ (1974) at my next gig – this was his favourite Disco record, and something I often used to slip in as a much loved oldie back when I started out in the mid-70’s. 

The music I played that night at APT was rich with reference to New York’s illustrious past, including my edit of ‘Psycho Killer’ by Talking Heads, which I’d put together especially for this night - this has since become one of my best-known cut-ups. I also played no less than six Teenage DJ tracks, half of which have never been made available. Oddly, now I look back, there was only one track included from the Credit To The Edit compilation (Brenda Taylor’s ‘You Can’t Have Your Cake And Eat It Too’), which had been issued in the UK the previous August. 

As with the ‘Electric Chair Manchester 26.02.05’ live mix that I recently uploaded here as exclusive content, this recording is presented here for the first time in its entirety. It was originally split into two CD length halves, hence the fade out you’ll hear on ‘You Can’t Have Your Cake’ at the end of what was Disc 1.
