This is the last song of  "Me, and the waters"  series.
I made this song with the sound of the forest rain and moving water, and I played crystal bowls with the little bit my singing.
In this july, it was always raining when I heard some goodbye.
Farewell has a special feeling that is sad and not sad always.

Tropic of Coldness is an Italian-US duo both based in Brussels, Belgium. David Gutman and Giovanni La Placa have been recording together since 2011 and have released through labels such as Cathedral Transmissions, Organic Industries, Shimmering Moods, Glacial Movements and Krysalisound. Their live performances have taken them across the Belgian cities as well as London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Frankfurt, and a couple of venues in The Netherlands.

Their new album ‘Human Kindness’ has been inspired by the current social and political framework, in particular the rise and mainstreaming of far-right political movements with their disheartening racism, authoritarianism, intolerance, bigotry and science-denialism, just to name a few of their contributions to the regression of mankind.

It is also dedicated to all the people who, everywhere in the world, are trying to peacefully resist and oppose the deterioration of our societies by being kind, empathic and helpful towards their fellow human beings.

In this sense, each song title is the outcome of a reflection on one of the above mentioned issues or has been inspired by a particular event. The sounds are slow and evolving as a long process of fully improvised guitar patterns are finely tuned into cathartic drones.

These pieces are landscapes that tread the finest lines: between hope and despair, fragility and strength. In between these lines are each one of us and the choices we make.

It was back in February 2012 that Michel contacted me to say he had sent me an mp3 "with a funny melody". "I am just wondering if you can play that. Exactly with the same tuning", he said. I had a listen and thought "You must be joking", as what I was presented with appeared to have no fixed notes nor conventional tuning, and sounded almost impossible to play. (I learnt later that the synthesized tune he had sent me was a melodic tracking - via software - of the musical pitches inherent in the voice of a man talking, recorded in Ghana by his friend Mark Dingemanse from the Radboud University). I put the strange sounding melody on repeat so that I could listen to it again and again, and by playing along continuously with it I eventually found the required notes on the trombone. After a week I could play the whole thing. And that was 2012. More recently, I found myself thinking, "Whatever happened to that tune". I had done a lot of work on it, and it seemed to have disappeared with no resulting composition appearing. So, I searched through my archives, found mine and Michel's original recordings, and played around with them until I had the beginnings of something coherent. At this point I contacted Michel, and he performed his usual magic, and eight years later we have our composition! Over the years Michel and I have occasionally swapped musical ideas, and our 'B-side' is the result of another such exchange, from a recording a year earlier. In February 2019 we released the debut album by an anonymous artist named Glåsbird, in the form of Grønland, a sonic expedition of Greenland. The album received much critical acclaim despite being from an anonymous artist and was even featured on Bandcamp Daily under their ‘best Ambient’ feature. CD copies of this record have long since sold out, but the Glåsbird continues its flight to a new destination: Svalbard.

Svalbard lies 78 degrees north, is inside the Arctic Circle and had a population of around 2600 people and an estimated 3000 polar bears! Its calendar year divides between the midnight sun and the polar nights. The former is a period of constant daylight and the latter is the opposite. However, the dark season is broken from time to time by spectacular Northern Lights.

In Svalbarð, Glåsbird became immersed once more in this next excursion, through means of Google Earth, 360° photos, blogger accounts of the isles, maps and also, videos by Efterklang who were an obvious reference point with the band having visited.
This time, we are treated to a greater number of tracks, as ten movements weave Modern Classical influenced Ambient soundscapes. The pristine, polished reverb of Grønland is replaced with a slightly muddier, more lo-fi approach to the sound as the artist strived to present a tape-eroded aesthetic to their work. The recordings deal with dramatic landscapes, glaciers, an abandoned coal community, a seed vault, the Island’s capital city Longyearbyen and of course, polar bears. Each piece feels icy cold, yet the warmth and hiss provided by the decaying tape effects provide a comfort blanket for the listener as perhaps you take in these scenes from a lonely cabin, at one with isolation and natural beauty.

The packaging for the album includes photography from Svalbard itself, courtesy of Aldona Pivoriene who is a professional photographer based in Norway. We are also set to release the next Glåsbird album next year. Where will the destination be? For now, we hope you enjoy immersing yourself in this new set of works exploring Svalbard.

This is an excerpt from one of the four longform tracks on this album, all of which are distinct excursions into a personal landscape of organic and broken melodic meanderings…the slapping spokes of a bicycle ridden through the tall grass, the swish of the walking stick, the buzz of the fly on the manure and the mysteriously subtle drone like chattering and burbling of the deepest countryside. Plaintive…melancholic…beatific…this is the loveliest of soundtracks to a simple life well lived away from the maddening crowd, and without regret.

“I’ve always had a deep connection with magnetic tape. Since the end of the ’80s, when I was just a kid, musical experimentation was inextricably linked to that medium, to the tapes that filled my days. Every recording, every edit, every sound etched onto those tapes represented my first naive steps into the world of music. It was a way to explore, to get to know myself and the sounds I could create.

Then, in the late ’90s, the introduction to Minidiscs and, later, HD recording changed everything. Daily interaction with tape seemed like a thing of the past, forgotten in favor of newer, more immediate, and versatile technologies. But that magic, that physicality, was hard to replace.

Over the years, I’ve watched with curiosity as magnetic tape made its return to the tables of ambient and experimental music creators. I realized that many had already rediscovered and embraced this medium, while for others, it had never really gone away. I, on the other hand, was much slower to return. But it was precisely through the works of other artists that I found the drive to immerse myself once again in this dimension, more convinced than ever.

Since 2020, after some attempts to incorporate tape elements into my compositions, I began to explore this path more seriously. I started creating tracks where the use of magnetic tape wasn’t just an accessory, but an expressive end in itself. “Magnetic Series” is not a concept album in the traditional sense, but rather a collection of tracks created between 2020 and 2024, united by a common thread: the manipulation of tape in various forms, from cassette loops to reel-to-reel, from slowed-down/speed-up tracks to entire mix passed through tape.

Beyond the allure of nostalgia and the fun that this medium provides, magnetic tape offers something unique: an intransigence that digital lacks. While digital allows you infinite possibilities, tape forces you to make definitive choices, pushing you into a creative process that permits no compromises. And perhaps it’s this very unyielding nature that makes it so fascinating and valuable.“
