In the first week of this series, we are highlighting a special night during fashion week early 2020. deroos &friends partnered up with hat designer Teressa Foglia to elevate the experience. KUNJA - Recorded live at GOSPËL - 02.08.2020

On the Winter Solstice of 2019, Laurence Matte came to Gospel and lit up the darkest night of the year.  She created a five hour sound journey over the course of the night, weaving through multiple genres, moods and musical perspectives.

The room was vibrating in a state of wild frenzy by the end, this excerpt come from the peak of the night.  Her signature style is present throughout, a special blend of organic and synthesized sounds, evocative vocals, driving rhythms, and ethereal breaks.  

Was certainly a journey to remember!  Even on the darkest nights you will find a fire burning bright at Gospël!

On November 23rd, 2019 Amer and Hassan of Old City hosted the first Majlis night at Gospel.  The air was feeling crisp and cold outside but inside Gospel the air was incensed and perfumed by sumptuous soundscapes as Old City began their set.  

This was a gathering centered around music and celebration that served as a magical journey through sounds both near and far.  Those in attendance danced through musical dreams this night.  And in typical Gospel fashion, found themselves at a raging party in the process.

Old City - Recorded live at GOSPËL - 11.23.2019

As Autumn arrived in 2019, Gospël settled into a continuous groove of wild memorable nights of celebration, thanks to the music programming of Kevin Duane.  His perspective amounted to a curation of vibration, and a wavelength that is absolutely unique to Gospël. 

However Kevin's contribution to these evenings of revelry go way beyond organizing and booking talent.  When he hits the DJ decks he understands the energetic vibrations of a room, and can give a space exactly what it needs to take off.  

This is exactly what occurred the night of September 27th, 2019, when Kevin Duane closed out the night with a set incorporating Disco, Soul, and Funk elements that evoked both the retro and the new.  Through it all people danced, connected and felt joyous.  And most important of all  memories were made - the marquee element of any great DJ set.

Valentine's Night happens in the dead of winter for a reason, to remind us of the inner fire of sensuality and celebrate it with ardor.  On this night several months ago at Gospel our collective fire flamed in the form of dancing, joy, indulgence and elevated spirits.

Thanks largely in part to Mashrik who graced the decks late into the night with his characteristic charisma and intensity, serving up a set that kept the club vibrating from wall to wall.  Dancers pranced on red rose petals to sounds from all over the world, their feet driven by fiery beats from multiple continents.  Mashrik's mix brought us all to wild places this night!

Magical nights at Gospël are to be expected, and beyond the usual enchantments we sometimes experience nights of total musical rapture and wild festivity.  Such a night came courtesy of Julya Karma, playing a set rich with otherworldly soundscapes, slamming low frequencies, and organic musical elements that warmed the room beautifully.

Julya's selection took those at Gospël on a journey as they danced to sounds of the future, present and past from musical cultures both near and far.  Wherever you find yourself, feel inclined to jump onto this musical magic carpet ride and find your groove through a colorful journey of sound!

Often within the realm of nightlife, the closing DJ receives the most recognition for a wild night of celebration despite the fact that the most challenging and nuanced job is that of the opening DJ.  In order to properly have that late night blast off, a room must be guided toward a state of both connection and excitement.  

This past November, Duddha navigated this crucial task in a way that was beautiful, eclectic, and absolutely innovative.  He warmed up the room with groovy tracks featuring vocalists and organic percussion, curating an atmosphere that invited dancing and community kinship.  Once there, he set off on a colorful exploration of textures, moods and even genres, creating a set that pushed the expectations of what an opening set can be.

Friday the 13th is commonly regarded with suspicion, however at Gospël the energetics of this day translate into even wilder revelry than usual. This was absolutely the case in December of last year when Layla Benitez closed out the night.

She brought her characteristic intensity to the stage and maintained the energy of the room to an extent beyond anyone's expectation.  Her selection consisted of tracks with epic dynamics, exciting organic percussion, massively impactful synthesizers, and savory syncopation throughout.  

Those who could not stop dancing should have eventually grown exhausted, yet the high vibrational spirit of her mixing inspired movement until closing.

Layla Benitez - Recorded Live At GOSPËL - 12.13.19

On a romantically charged Valentine's night, Eli Light came to Gospël brought her fire and wild sensuality to the decks.  She played a set that set hearts alight and spirits flying.  Those who where there journeyed with a blazing intensity as they danced upon red rose petals on a night charged with love.  

Her selection united the ancient with the futuristic, combining raw organic drums with sophisticated synthesized sound design.  Tracks driven by hand percussion were often melded into mystical soundscapes.  Magical sound exploded from the speakers like magma from a volcano as people danced and celebrated the night away.

Eli Light - Recorded Live At GOSPËL - 02.14.20

Fashion week in New York City typically entails amazing gatherings and parties.  The magnetism of the city is particularly strong over the course of these weeks, drawing together creators, purveyors, and enthusiasts from all over the world and all walks of art.  

Music director Kevin Duane orchestrated two jam packed weekends, and even an exciting week in between at Gospël.  Yet a set that absolutely stands out was his own set on Thursday February 13th.  

The energy within the club was undeniably hot to begin with, yet with all the activity happening all over the city, it wasn't necessarily the most cohesive, as everyone's attention span is limited by all the concurrent fashion week events.  With this understanding, Kevin managed to warm up the room in a most beautiful and exciting way, drawing people to the dance floor with gorgeous and sexy opening tracks.  

He essentially brought the room to a state of cohesiveness, and once there he proceeded to blast off into the night with a musical journey involving organic percussion, soulful vocals, and a flow that combined sounds of Latin America, Africa, and Soul music.  Soon enough everyone realized the only party they had to be at was at Gospël!

On a great Thursday night at GOSPEL, we welcomed The Soul Brothers debut in New York City. The music was vibrant and the energy was great in the room. The Soul Brothers created harmonious textures for everyone to enjoy, dance & celebrate!

The Soul Brothers - Recorded Live At GOSPËL - 05.23.19

The few days right before New Years tends to be relatively quiet in New York City - a calm before the wild storm of festivity that always follows. Over at Gospël however, a weekend of ecstatic party activity still ensued and resulted in a lovely conclusion to an amazing year of celebration.

Leading this celebration on the 27th was Joey Greiner, who brought his electrifying energy to the decks that evening.  He took club-goers on a journey through various genres, with some tracks harkening back to previous decades.  

His selection lit up the darkness of this typically lax week in December, and started our New Year's celebrations a few days early! Joey's presence at Gospël always comes with a sense of celebration, and this thriller of a set allows you to transport back to the last days of 2019 when we danced off the holiday relaxation.

Joey Greiner - Recorded Live At GOSPËL - 12.27.19

Back in early November, Gospël experienced a lighting malfunction on a Thursday night just before the club was set to open for the weekend.  It was nothing major, but it did result in a much darker ambiance than usual.

Amidst the darkness, Milö lit up the dance floor with a musical journey through beautiful melodies, massive bass grooves, and dreamy harmonies.  Dancers lucidly dreamed on their feet through tracks that sparkled with sounds created with great imagination and creativity.  What could have been dark and gloomy was transformed into the fantastical and seductive.   

Milö maintained a lovely flow throughout, melding tracks together in ways that both energized and revealed newfound beauty in the music.  He utilized the lack of light to play a set geared more so toward our subconscious aspects, that which dreams are made of.

Typically after Labor Day, New York City will hit the ground running into the hustle of the autumn.  Last September, there was no question that Gospël was in full swing again, and that first weekend back from blissful summer vacations and burns out west was absolutely wild.

Someone who beautifully brought their creativity and energy into this weekend was Bonafide, playing a set that traversed through various genres yet still maintained musical cohesion through vibe.  He started off the evening with a seductive and melodic selection, and flowed seamlessly into a night of soulful dance music that often had a twist of Latin or African influence.

Although we were not able to dance in recent months, we hope this mix will bring you back to those wild nights where we moved and grooved without inhibitions!

Bona Fide - Recorded Live At GOSPËL - 09.12.19

The night of November 7th was a special one at Gospël.  The decks were graced by two masters of weaving beautiful and fantastical music - Milo and Claudius Raphael.  Two weeks back we posted Milo's set, and this week we have the pleasure to present Claudius Raphael's sonic journey from this night.

Claudius boldly commanded the dance floor through different moods and even genres, manipulating expectations and making explorations into uncommon musical landscapes.  All the while he maintained the utmost of sensitivity and awareness to the vibe in the room, and as such we were all able to travel together. 

It's not often that a DJ set will include slamming beats from different continents, a spin on cinematic music, and variable changes of tempo.  Yet with Claudius at the helm of the Gospël spaceship, one's presumptions of a typical DJ set will be upended in the most delightful way!

Claudius Raphael - Recorded Live At GOSPËL - 11.07.19

Amidst the dead of winter, the musical excitement and vitality at Gospël burns bright and warmly throughout the night.  This was especially true on the night of January 30th of this year, when 2melo came by and curated a special and magical musical journey. 

2melo's selection weaved together tracks in different languages, from different times and places, taking the dance floor on an international tour de force.  His deft mixing brought these seemingly disparate elements together as rhythms from Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa spoke to each other throughout the night.  A DJ is not often thought of as a translator, yet 2melo assumed this mantle this night by bridging musical cultures together.  The dance floor maintained a continuous state of ecstatic excitement as we traveled together through such a varied musical soundscape. 

Such sets remind us how Gospël stands at the vanguard of nightlife in New York, as a place where the unexpected is often realized in creative and exciting ways.  One night we will dance again, but until then our memories of nights like this will warm our hearts.

2melo - Recorded Live At GOSPËL - 01.30.20

This week we hearken back to one of those last nights out before quarantines and lock-downs forced our celebrations to subside.  Let this serve as a reminder of the momentum Gospel had in early 2020, and rest assured that such momentum is ready to explode into motion as soon as it becomes possible to do so. 

On the evening of March 7th, Holosound graced the decks with his characteristic refined mixing and cutting-edge track curation.  He energized the evening's festivities with an innovative vibe that incorporated disco elements, futuristic sonic textures, dreamy vocalizations, and organic instrumentation.  
It was an absolute treat to hear tracks that were very new to the world, and club-goers traveled through uncharted musical territory. 

When we finally find each other on the dance floor once again, you can expect Holosound to be at the vanguard of creating fresh musical journeys with all the wonderful music created during a time of reflection.

Holosound - Recorded Live At GOSPËL - 03.07.20

This week we are pleased to present the other half of the last Saturday night at Gospël in 2020, a night of especially vivid sounds and musical jubilation. Recalling such revelry serves as a reminder that the music, dancing, and celebration will never be over, despite whatever circumstances that arise.  When the time is right we will pick up where we left off!

After Holosound's fantastically fresh set, Tobieas took the helm of the Gospël spaceship and blasted us off into a futuristic and progressive sonic space.  Synthesizer serenades soared over massive bass textures, evoking a sense of both beauty and delightfully brutalizing beats.  The dance floor was inundated by an influx of electric energy, as the club moved to the sounds of a not-so-far-off sci-fi future.  Eventually Tobieas steered the Gospël spaceship back to earth with the grounding sounds of organic percussion and soulful vocals, bringing the night's journey to a satisfying conclusion.

Our excitement from nights like these still resonates, and all we need is a musical reminder to take us back to that time and place when we celebrated with our extended party families.  Eventually the time will come when we will make new memories as we live through more wild nights.  Until that time comes, Gospël's Soundcloud will continue to serve as a means of transporting yourself back to the dance floor.
