A mobile street trader in the backstreets of the Da'an district of Taipei, recorded between October 1990 and April 1991.

During my six month stay in Taiwan I became rather obsessed with recording some of the many street traders who roved the backstreets of Taipei during the daytime. Usually traveling on bicycles or motorbikes, each one had a specific 'call' - while some sounded purely functional, others had a melodic quality that came across as evocative and almost song-like.

The mid-afternoon ambient sounds of Udaipur, in Rajasthan.

In the foreground a bird calls intermittently while in the middle distance somebody is practicing the sarangi.  Further in the background, devotional singing and prayer can be heard while the general rumble of activity in the old quarter of the city pervades the outer reaches of this recording.

Recorded from the roof of a guest house (see photo) located near the ghats at the northern end of Lake Pichola, between the City Palace Museum and the Jagdish Temple.

Sounds from a ceremony in honour of Confucius.  Held every year on 28 September at the Taipei Confucius Temple, this ceremony features traditional music and stylized dancing (as seen in the photos).

Field recordings from the archives, uploaded as I rediscover and digitise them.

Please note, this really isn't audiophile stuff - most of these were recorded using a portable cassette recorder with a small external stereo mic, and for several others I used an iPhone.

Also, aside from some very basic editing to determine the start and end points, I haven't changed these recordings in any way so please excuse any surface noise, etc, that could have been made better with some studio tweakery :)
