On November 13, 2013, one of the strongest hurricanes ever to make landfall, Yolanda, blew across the islands of Samar and Leyte. Our city, Tacloban, was the hardest hit population center. The electricity was off for a year and the cleanup went on for months while thousands of corpses rotted under the rubble and out on the beaches. When Death Came Howling

ON A YEAR LONG TRIP TO CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA IN THE 1970'S I TOOK A SIDE TRIP INTO THE HIGH ANDES OF NORTHERN PERU.  I WALKED ALL DAY UP A MOUNTAIN PATH  WITH THREE COUSINS AND TWO MULES TO THE FARMSTEAD OF A CURANDERO. I WENT ON A NIGHT LONG SHAMANIC JOURNEY ON A WINDY NIGHT WITH A HALF MOON IN THE SKY. IT STARTED WITH A POT OF SAN PEDRO CACTUS AND ENDED AT DAWN WITH A STRONG WIND AND A RAINBOW IN THE WESTERN SKY.
I HAVEN'T  BEEN THE SAME SINCE.
