Anthony Ray talks with Michael Deegan-McCree, criminal justice reform advocate.  McCree talks about his experiences passing federal and state legislation, his transition to working in pretrial justice and how all of this impacts the African American community.

Michael Deegan-McCree is a Legislative Advocate concentrated on reforming the criminal legal system, protecting voting rights for all citizens and ensuring access to quality mental health treatment. He currently serves as the Partnerships Coordinator at The Bail Project. Michael plays a pivotal role in developing grassroots and grasstops partnerships to enable The Bail Project to best serve their clients.

Michael is a native Californian born and raised in the Bay Area. Before working for The Bail Project Michael worked at The Dream Corps, where he served as the Policy Associate for the #cut50 initiative, helping to lead their state and federal legislative efforts. While at #cut50, Michael played a policy role in helping pass the First Step Act, in 2018, landmark legislation that the New York Times said would "deliver the most significant changes to our criminal justice system in a generation."

Michael's concentration on racial and economic inequality within the criminal justice system stems from his progressive ideology especially on issues of Criminal Legal and Mental Health reform. It is his belief that it takes coalitions of directly impacted people, along with unlikely allies from different political-ideological beliefs to deliver lasting structural change that will benefit our communities. Michael has also served as a District Advisor to California State Senator, Majority Whip Nancy Skinner, and an Assistant to Congresswoman Barbara Lee of California's 13th Congressional District.

Dr. Larry J. Walker  is an Assistant Professor, University of Central Florida, Department of Educational Leadership and Higher Education. Previously, he was selected as a Congressional Fellow with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. After completing his fellowship Dr. Walker served as the Legislative Director for Congressman Major R. Owens. Dr. Walker's responsibilities included supervising the legislative staff and developing the Congressman's legislative agenda.

Dr. Michael J. Sorrell is the longest-serving President in the 147-year history of Paul Quinn College. During his 12 years of leadership, Paul Quinn has become a national movement for its efforts to remake all of higher education to become more responsive to student and societal needs.
Included among Paul Quinn’s numerous accomplishments during President Sorrell’s tenure are the following: winning the HBCU of the Year, the HBCU Student Government Association of the Year, and the HBCU Business Program of the Year awards; achieving recognition as a member of the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll; creating the New Urban College Model; demolishing 15 abandoned campus buildings; partnering with PepsiCo to transform the football field into the WE over Me Farm; achieving full-accreditation from the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS); creating the College’s first faculty-led study abroad program; and rewriting all institutional fundraising records.

Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough A native of Atlanta, Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough was his high school salutatorian and student body president in 1985, and went on to earn degrees from the University of Georgia, Miami University in Ohio, and a doctorate in higher education from Georgia State University. He has enjoyed a fulfilling career in student affairs, serving at Emory University, Georgia State University, Old Dominion University, and finally Albany State University in 2000 where he became the Vice President for Student Affairs at the age of 32. In October of 2004, at the age of 37, he was named the 12th president of Philander Smith College. In 2012 he became the 7th president of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

TMCF’s 47 member schools make up the publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) which represent nearly 300,000 students.  Under his leadership as President & CEO, TMCF has focused on creating innovative partnerships, increasing organizational sustainability and advancing bipartisan advocacy.

For over 48 years, William “Bill” Hubbard has been a noteworthy leader in the Financial Services Industry! You may know him from his work as the CEO/President of First Merchants Financial Services, but Bill can also be credited with contributions to Businesses, Education, and Community.

William “Bill” Hubbard has been honored with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) Marketplace Ethics Award which is the highest Award displayed for his contributions to integrity. He holds a Bachelors Degree from N.C. A & T State University and currently resides in Winston-Salem, NC.

While at N.C. A & T  he met his wife Brenda of 46 years, and they have 5 children and eight grandchildren. While at A & T, Bill was very active in various organizations such as SGA, Treasurer, served with Rev. Nelson Johnson, who was Vice-President. He also became a member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, YMCA, taught Math at Upward Bound, Editor-In-Chief N.C. A & T Yearbook and Newspaper. Upon graduation, moved to Durham, NC and became the 2nd Black Loan Officer for SBA and provided the largest loan for a minority business at that time to Sam Dillard of Sam Dillard’s Bar B-Que of $50,000 (a record for black business). After that he worked on nearly $500,000 in loans for Black Contractors all across the state of NC.

Bill is a Charter Member of the NC Black Chamber of Commerce (2001), Charter Member of WS Black Chamber (2004), NAACP Lifetime Member, Owned and Operated Hubbard Enterprises

(Residential and Commercial Cleaning Firm for 30 years) in Durham, High Point and Winston-Salem. He also made History while in Graduate School by becoming the First Black Editor of a major newspaper in NC, Greensboro News & Record.

At Jerry Watkins (Black Owned Automotive Dealership) Cadillac-GMC in Winston-Salem, NC, Bill was one of the Top 50 Sales Agents in the USA landing a contract with Blue Cross/Blue Shield to supply them with a fleet of vehicles. He graduated #1 from General Motors University and was offered his own Cadillac Dealership in Kansas.

IT'S EASY SON is a broadcast that consists of interviews of thought leaders from a broad spectrum of society where we ask them about their journey from childhood to the place they hold now in society.
