This MIDI track describes what the Elves call "coire" - the stirring. It is a season in between Winter and Spring and is when the snow begins to melt, the warm South Wind starts caressing, the water begins to trickle and the animals awake.

A Song of the Awakening (film cue)

Mettarë/Yestarë, means "Last Day/First Day" in the Quenya language (from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth). The title is in reference to a unique two-day period in the Elvish calendar year which occurs immediately after the final season of the year, coirë (or 'the stirring or awakening'), and before the first season of the year, tuilë, or Spring. It's as if everything is hushed and holding its breath and waiting...

       Ricercar I: lórellinyalien-lindalë (2007) is Quenya Elvish for "song of memory and  emotion" but it is also about the joy of discovering a new instrument, in my case, the viola da gamba. I was enraptured by its tones and this song was a result of that. It also coincided with my brief obsession with early music cello.

Ricercare II: allasëalindalë (2007) is a sister work to Ricercare I. In Quenya Elvish is means "song of joy." It too was informed and inspired by the beauty of a new instrument, the gamba. Joy has many colors, right?

Ricercar IV: the exulting ones derives its title from the book of Isaiah, the oracle against Babylon. They are the Mighty Ones who execute His anger, the Weapons of His Indignation. It's a song of the highest of rejoicing.

Ricercare V: adalindalë (Quenya Elvish for "father's song") although written for my dad, was made of ideas that I wrote before his accident which almost claimed his life. It was fitting after seeing a man full of life and wisdom kept alive by cold machines in a coma that the ideas were distilled into the whiskey it is today. It's a song of tenderness and gentleness.

Ricercar VI: al-tascheth is about weaving, changing the status quo of normal reality, praying and asking for divine intervention. After all, a spell is simply the weaving of words. If you argue that, look up the history of our English word for spelling.  If our words have power to destroy, then they  have power to build. This is a weaving of powerful intent, a prayer, asking wordless things from my Maker. Al-tascheth is Hebrew for "do not destroy" - song structure which King David utilized in the Temple. It's as if it is a request for a protective covering over someone...

This Ricercar is titled with a Quenya Elvish name, meaning "song of the stirring." coirë is the Elvish transitional season between Winter and Spring, where the forest creatures begins stirring and the trees start carefully sprouting and the ice melts. Lin always means " song." It is a Song of the Stirring, perhaps a stirring of the heart.

Ricercar VII: coirëlindalë *LIVE from the Arts Village*

This recording was done in my friend's basement in Minot, North Dakota. I had freshly graduated from my undergraduate music degree. In time, I was about to find out (while studying early music) that I needed to write cello music! This recording, named Shigionoth is in four parts, essentially four complete, but out of context sketches in my composition book. This was a proto-attempt at discovering how different but related ideas could work together. The music in these ideas would later become two different works - Lullaby (2009) and Stars of Twilight (2010). (I added a little processing, to even the volume and make the transitions as smooth as possible). Enjoy!
