»Gay Goth Scene« is the first single from The Hidden Cameras' new album »AGE«, which will be released in early 2014. The song has been part of The Hidden Cameras' live performances since 2002 (mostly at shows around Halloween). Dark crooning on epic string chords, »Gay Goth Scene« was recorded by Ohad Benchetrit (Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think) and was finally completed with the otherworldly vocals of iconic Canadian singer Mary Margaret O'Hara.
»Gay Goth Scene« is an observational fiction of a likewise fictional family conflict:
»(...) We don't want no gay goth scene in this house / We don't want no gorgeous teen in your mouth (...)«
Joel Gibb sings the vibrato of the chastising parents' perspective, while O'Hara's free-improv descent into hell channels the wounded soul of the boy and also the mother and father's exaggerated imagination of a non-existent ›scene‹.
Kai Stänicke's award-winning short film for »Gay Goth Scene« reveals yet another level of interpretation, the Berlin-based director shifts the desperate situation of forbidden love into the classroom.
»Gay Goth Scene« -- in both song and film -- is a tragic love story foreshadowing the tone and theme of The Hidden Cameras' upcoming album »AGE«.

“’AGE’ deconstructs my musical roots’. There are the faintest references in every piece, almost inaudibly miniature, but they are there. Actually, to understand AGE, you have to place your ear to the ground and try to will yourself to hear the growth of the roots beneath its surface while closing your eyes and sifting out all other sounds, including your own heartbeat.

With “Year of the Spawn,” there are trumpets, trombones, a French horn, and behind this thicket, between the ghostly overtones, the ice-cold drum beat of Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” flickers throughout the second verse. Chilly Gonzales is on the piano. Joel Gibb works like a graphic artist. He engineers meticulous sound-sculptures and collages whose exactitude stays concealed at first behind an aesthetic of extremely harmonious, yet also dreary, pop music.

The Hidden Cameras are set to celebrate 10 years of making music this year with a headline show at the Barbican on the 2nd July. 

There couldn’t be a more fitting way to celebrate 10 years of dazzling indie anthems with taboo-busting lyrics than with The Hidden Cameras biggest London show to date. The Barbican show forms part of Canadian Blast’s Canada Day celebrations, also featuring performances from fellow compatriots Chilly Gonzales, Woodpigeon and Devon Sproule. In the run up to the main event, the Foyer will play host to a series of free shows featuring former Spirit of the West member Linda McRae, and solo performances from Mantler, Sandro Perri, Ryan Driver and Maylee Todd. At 5pm, Chilly Gonzales’ critically acclaimed feature film, ‘Ivory Tower’, will be shown for free in the main hall. The film features yet more Canadian talent thanks to cameos from Tiga, Feist and Peaches.
