The History Department is now a full-fledged trio eager to spread their brand of cheery indie rock throughout Austin. Alchemy, the band's debut EP, fizzles and shimmers with watery grooves and glinting guitars, a fresh-faced sound you might expect from a band with such a bookish name. Quite surprisingly, however, both Alchemy and The History Dept. never succumb to the trite forget-ability that seems to plague so many contemporary indie rock records and bands. Sure, none of these songs reinvent the wheel, but there's a particular charm at work here that goes unrivaled throughout Austin's current DIY scene.
