The First Time

'The Ground' is a reflective song about moving on from a past relationship, whilst wishing that person all the best. The song came from a drum groove, which was later adapted for more of modern jazz feel. Next came the main guitar chords, with the melody/lyrics added shortly after. The spoken word/rap sections bring an exciting and energetic feel to the song, whilst giving more context to the song. The middle section opens out to intertwining violins and lush guitars, sailing the song to a reminiscent ending. FFO Gogo Penguin, Fink, The Cinematic Orchestra, Alfa Mist.

"With My Love" - are the first words, on the first Carte de Visite, written beneath a basket of flowers, in an incomplete sandalwood bound family photo album from the late 19th century. With colour photography a distant development, these petals and stems would likely have been coloured and augmented by hand. 

Carte de Visites were a small format of photograph patented by André Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri. These small (often albumen) prints would be collected, generated, and exchanged in an equivalent manner to visiting cards. They would form a sort of proto 'social media', finding their home amidst the curios of Victorian Parlours. As well as famous figures, images of one's own relatives were often procured, with studios popping up across the country, affording the well to do a glimpse at their own visage, and an opportunity to share it with others. 

"With My Love" is an attempt to complete the history of a long-orphaned photo album bought in the Baltic Triangle in Liverpool, through 40 hand drawn ink sketches placed alongside the photographs in the missing frames. The accompanying music explores themes of lost histories, key Women in the beginnings of Photography, as well as selected Piano Works written within the project's duration. 

The Album will be a digital only release, with a bonus track available only via Bandcamp. Ten unique A5 Giclée prints of hand drawn pieces from the photo album on Bamboo paper will accompany the release. These are limited to one per order.

The other day, I was discussing with my good old friend the constant fluctuation of the music release pendulum that I follow, oscillating between my absolutely favourite artists and labels [where sometimes it can feel like I am inside an echo chamber] and chasing the latest and new [where sometimes I am guided by marketing trends of PR]. As usual, the sweet spot is somewhere in the middle, and I will still chart my own course. Today is an immensely gorgeous example of the former, where I am eagerly celebrating a brand new release from my favourite artist – Ben Chatwin. And this is a perfect model of balance, where Chatwin does not simply sharpen his skills but projects them another leap forward, creating another new style that one day, I’m sure, will stand out as prime. If you peruse these pages you’ll be sure to find nearly every release from Ben Chatwin going back to 2015, and then, once again, even further in time, to 2008, when he was recording under another named project. But with his latest releases on Village Green, the last of which was The Hum (2020), Chatwin managed to evoke the voice of the inorganic, blending melodic beauty with intense sonics and tense, edgy rhythms. “Obsessed with the physicality of sound, Chatwin utilises modular synthesis to imbue life and instability into the recordings. Pushing his exploration of analogue textures, audio is passed through an arsenal of compressors and saturators to build layers of grit and grime around this new set of tactile compositions.” So yes, I’m a massive fan of his compositions, and yes, I have even secured a coveted remix of his for an upcoming single I intend to release any day now [more on that later!]. For his new album, titled Verdigris, Chatwin set up his own imprint, Disinter, to take us down his forward-thinking evolution of sound.
