Throughout my entire career as a musician I have had a seemingly endless folder of short demos, lost projects files,
things I’ll get to later but never actually will and assorted other abandoned ideas.
Some of them make up the best things I’ve ever written and for reasons that only the universe can explain, they remain unfinished or forever in limbo.

Strangely so many of these ideas seem to clock in at 90 Seconds and the idea to release a compilation album of them was born. Knowing how many people had mountains of similar short tunes, I assembled a crew of 59 artists and myself, making 60 in total. Each of us has unearthed something that we hold dear, or created something especially for the project. While focusing primarily on Drum and Bass there is other genres represented like Dubstep, Jungle, Breakbeat and Hardcore.

The 90 Second Maximum was initially a project geared around showing love to the records in history that mean the most to me. The time length allowed on my favourite social media outlet is 90 Seconds, and over the last 18 months I have been creating a body of content that is pure love from the heart. Sending flowers to the music and the music makers who have touched me the most. 

Now it is time to showcase some amazing musicians and in the process set free some of the magic these people have created. I hope you like it.

Evasion - Nostalgia

Incurzion Audio, persist onward as their natural tendencies of sonic exploration seemingly never end. Preceding the first encounter with Niallo’s track ‘Crisis’ on ‘We Are Incurzion Vol.2’, the ensuing EP ‘Juxtaposition’ comes to life. Breaching musical confines amid every track while honing the sound of the label.

Niallo exerts cunning rhythms and eccentric styles throughout the 4 track EP, showcasing his imaginative assortment in sound design and desire to defy genre limits. The colorful display of sound and diverse arrangements go at full force, coinciding with the imprint's vision.

The track we are premiering today, I first discovered in Niallo’s ‘100% Niallo Production Showcase - Vol.1’, last year so it brings great joy to finally put the track ‘Physical’ in the spotlight. The track spirals into a 4x4 blood pumping pace, layered with jumbled vocal cuts and shuffling synth textures. Flowing through off kilter cadences and distorted choral swifting over the hammering beat, evermore exercising his ingenuity in musical variance.

Hospital Records proudly present the debut solo album from drum & bass icon Grafix. ‘Half Life’ is an introspective glimpse into the influences and sonic development of the Bristol-based producer, who over the years has established himself as a pinnacle of the dance music world. Grafix’s first ever studio longplayer as a solo artist consists of 14 hotly-anticipated pulse pounding anthems, featuring killer collaborations from the likes of Metrik, Lauren L’aimant, Reiki Ruawai and Chrissie Huntley in his hit singles ‘Somewhere’, ‘Feel Alive’ and ‘Skyline’.

Grafix draws upon his love for rave culture on the acid heavy ‘Blast Out’ - a no-holds-barred drum & bass system shocker. Skittery vocal chops, shredding bass hits and minimal-funk drums show the side of Grafix well known for tearing up the dance - never afraid to drop a wild card.

From the hypnotic and distorted energies on the likes of ‘CTRL’ and album title track ‘Half Life’, to the forward-facing vibes on LP numbers such as ‘Accelerate’ and ‘The Chance’, the versatile flavours supplied by Grafix throughout are a testament to his years of experience in the studio.

Other album highlights include two tracks with the immensely talented Lauren L’aimant who boasts previous releases on staple dance imprints including Anjunadeep, Colorize and Protocol Recordings. ‘Watch The Sky’ is an anthemic stepper home to Lauren’s spine-tingling vocals and Grafix’s catchy synth hooks. ‘Feel Alive’ captures the pair’s undeniable ability to strike up a euphorically cutting-edge dance music banger.

The ‘Half Life’ LP also features the previously released tracks ‘Radiance’ as well as radio hit ‘Somewhere’ featuring New Zealand’s very own Reiki Ruawai. Both tracks of which are no stranger to worldwide drum & bass listeners.

Hospital Record’s soulful drum and bass aficionado Makoto is back with his seventh studio album, ‘Motion Of Change’. Following on from his popular ‘What You Need’ EP and the vibrant ‘Maybe We’ll Make It (feat. Mark Force and Archaik)’, his new album brings a blend of jungle, jazz, funk, and soul with Makoto’s signature euphoric touch. With over twenty years in the game, Makoto’s immaculate discography and signature sound have seen the Japanese born producer pave the way for liquid drum & bass all the way into 2022. A true pioneer of his craft since his Good Looking Records days of the late 90s, he’s since racked up an impressive amount of releases on Innerground, UKF, Liquid V and his very own imprint Human Elements.

More recently, Makoto’s output includes his two Hospital albums ‘Salvation’ (2017) and ‘Tomodachi Sessions’ (2019), and the hugely popular ‘What You Need’ ft Vonne selected as the first ever drum & bass track to be played on Sarah Story’s BBC Radio 1 Future Dance show, alongside support from the likes of DJ Marky, Bryan Gee, Flava D, Nu:Tone, Lenzman and more.

The motivational ‘Step Into Your Power’ features ravishing vocals from rising D+B superstar Ruth Royall. Makoto’s production skills don’t go a miss as he cooks up luscious pad hits and a booming bottom end. With the pair recently releasing the flavourful ‘New Love’ on Soulvent Records, expect good vibes galore as two of the most uplifting sound suppliers in drum & bass collide once again.

Makoto unleashes spaced out synth work, soulful guitar licks and a dynamic crescendo of instrumentation on album title track ‘Motion Of Change’ with Hospital Records’ latest signing, the immensely talented singer-songwriter, SOLAH delivering sweet melodies and majestic high notes.

Makoto travels into deeper territories on ‘Explorer’ ft Degs, as he provides grittier production complete with a moody bassline. Labelmate and multi-talented vocalist, MC and producer Degs dishes out a slew of dynamic bars and dreamy harmonies for the pair’s first collaboration since ‘Illuminate’ on Makoto’s ‘Tomodachi Sessions’ in 2019.

Embracing his love for the original sound of the 90’s, the junglistic instrumental ‘Ascender’ brings future-retro synthesis, crisp cut breakbeats and a summery ambience that lays the foundation for the perfect sub-heavy slammer.

Makoto and London-based singer Karina Ramage reunite on ‘Without You’ after previously collaborating on ‘Shine On Through’, ‘I Don’t Wanna Wake Up’ and Forza favourites ‘Wading Through The Crowds’ and ‘Trial Mountain’. Karina’s soothingly crafted vocals compliment the sincere violins and trademark production prowess from Makoto, making ‘Without You’ another future soulful singalong anthem.

The album also features an eclectic mixture of both fresh and legendary talent from across the drum & bass circuit and beyond, brace yourself for a dynamic streak of sonic contributions from the likes of Singing Fats, Cleveland Watkiss, Liane Carroll, Lauren Archer, Rasmus Faber, Pete Simpson, LXT, and Helena May. Hello, and welcome.

If this voice you’re hearing right now is recognisable to you, chances are you understand it as being the voice of Stamina MC. You’d be right, although today I’ll speak about a lesser known production alias — Armour, which was a graffiti tag I would vandalise my neighbourhood with as a teenager. Anyways, production has always been an interest of mine, and I’ve been tinkering away over the years trying to learn what I can and maybe create something I reckon is cool. I only ever had one tune actually released, north of twenty years ago now, so this 90 Second Maximum concept was pretty much a perfect fit for me as I have a healthy supply of short or incomplete ideas.   This one I’ve submitted is rare because it also features a vocal of mine — which isn’t as common as might be expected, as since I don’t work quickly I mostly listen to ideas far too much as a producer to thereafter feel inspired as a writer. But this, started from a piano loop I can longer remember the source of, just had me experimenting and layering sounds, seeing where I’d end up. I’m really into soundtracky, cinematic moods, so more than even trying for something that DJs might play, I was aiming for something that might enhance a movie scene or similar. To that end I very deliberately didn’t add any drums or bassline, just percussion… and lyrically I only really tried to let the mood of the music guide the subject matter; I hit record and those words were what came out. I may have re-recorded a phrase or two, but it’s more or less just off the cuff.   I try to be quite intentional about making things I’m confident other people likely won’t, so I hope it finds an appreciative ear out there somewhere.
