#BlackOurStory Month. She takes the listeners on a journey that represents Black experiences of the last 25 years.

We celebrate our 50TH Episode with our host Peter's long-time friend in rap Chris Portugal aka Thes-One of the beloved Los Angeles duo People Under The Stairs (shout out to Double K). After taking a train up from San Diego, Thes picked Peter up in Fullerton and they hung out for a couple days around the San Pedro area of L.A. Where they talked to length in what will end up being a great two-part episode. Reaching the 50th episode too has quite a bit of sentimental value to our host and if you listen to Peter's long intro you'll get the full picture. Elated to have Count Bass D on the 69th episode of our modest lil podcast - I quickly engaged with the Count's music when I discovered 'T-Boz Tried To Talk To Me' back in 1994 while DJing on college radio WUVT 90.7FM. That quickly lead me to his seminal, ahead-of-its-time debut 'Pre Life Crisis'. From that point, I have carefully tracked his career and have made great efforts to collect as much of his music as possible. No easy task as Count's catalog is rich with many fantastic projects/albums. In this talk we go as far back as his adolescence, playing in the church with his father, a traveling preacher. Dub and bonus beats mixes were the hidden treats on many '80s hip-hop 12-inch singles – tripped out tracks where re-imagined bass, drum and tape edit arrangements took center stage, and echo-drenched rap fragments floated in and out like ghostly guests. These mixes were also showcases for a generation of transcendent engineers/editors/producers – e.g. Aldo Marin, Carlos Berrios, Omar Santana, Marley Marl & others – at an early moment when hip-hop, R&B, electro and dance music comfortably comingled. Flying solo at the controls on this episode, I explore an hour of ’80s hip-hop 12-inch bonus beats and dub mixes, from the slept-on to the classic.
