It all started with the cassette.. Growing up in the 90's pre-internet era, meant that our ways to get inspired was by the things we observed in the streets, skate shops, record stores, magazines, VHS tapes or the music we heard on the radio. 

Deeply inspired by the US East Coast underground hip hop scene, we started collecting vinyl and doing dubs from the rarely-existing dope DK radio shows.. (thanks to Peder, Knud, Noize, Typhoon & DJ Power for the inspiration!).
Dubbing and compiling the illest joints from the radio to cassette became a weekly rutine.

Piles of mixtapes on cassettes and 20+ internet years later, we now felt like doing a tribute cassette to the sounds that raised us. 

This is actually the 20th Pasteelo Mixtape - What a way to celebrate!

The mixtape mainly contains instrumentals and a few vocal tracks from the 1994-2000 golden era of independent hip hop. Enjoy!

Ten years ago today, producer James Yancey aka J Dilla passed away unexpectedly. For hip-hop producers the world came to a standstill. No one saw it coming. That week, Dilla had celebrated his 32nd birthday and released his magnum opus, Donuts, to universal acclaim. Just as his life inspired so much great hip-hop, rap and neo-soul music, Dilla’s death inspired artists everywhere to honor his impact with an outpouring of dedications, imitations, and everything in between. For fans, the mourning period seemed to go on without pause, a processional wake that would last an era. Ten years later, the ripples are still being felt, from the worlds of hip-hop to jazz to electronic music.

The day Dilla passed, Steve Ellison aka Flying Lotus spun a special live mix for dublab including hip-hop, rare grooves (some of which were sampled by Dilla and Madlib), exotic international records, and a few of Dilla’s own tracks. A fitting tribute to a producer who was able to include, in the words of Flying Lotus, so many voices on one record.

Hip hop, and you don't stop: this Carhartt WIP radio show brings you Chopped Herring Records, founded in 2001 in Manchester by collector, rare vinyl eBay merchant, and DJ Bob Lipitch aka Pro Celebrity Golf aka Chubby Grooves. Since the beginning his label releases limited edition hip hop vinyl - never released before recordings from back in the day and new music from today's artists - always dope and fresh. The „Three Sinister Syllables“ LP by the artists Pro Celebrity Golf and Jay Glaze from 2004 is probably the record, that put the UK label on the global hip hop map. Others artists from their big roster include old and current stars like Action Bronson, Masta Ace or Stetsasonic, as well as new names like Epidemic from South Florida, Timeless Truth from NYC or US duo OG Aborigines amongst many others. Many of them are included in our Carhartt WIP Chopped Herring Records radio Show that was ‪mixed by Mr Sonny James & Matthew Law of the‪ "Illvibe Collective" out of Philadelphia.
