Can't Help But Fly

This is remix is an ode to all those hurt by the prison industrial system of the United States, and is dedicated towards transforming the "eye for an eye" retributive justice model towards a restorative justice model - one that strengthens, rather than fractures, communities. 

This remix is based off of two recordings: Rising Appalachia's "Spirit's Cradle" and a reading by the great, late poet Etheridge Knight. "Apology for Apostasy" was one of many poems that Knight wrote while incarcerated, which were originally published in the collection "Poems from Prison." His poems bear witness to the resiliency of the creative spirit. Leah Song, of Rising Appalachia, has been a long time advocate of criminal justice reform and is involved in projects that bring yoga, song and mindfulness into prisons.

The sandy shores of southern India seem like an unlikely place for an electronic composer to meet a couple of sisters who play rootsy Americana with a political twist. But that's our lucky break. David Block, better known as The Human Experience, reunited with the sisters he met so many years ago, who have now found their way into every music magazine and public radio program of note over the past years, thanks to their part-roots, part-psychedelic, part-rural, and all-advocacy act, Rising Appalachia. While the two sonic projects seem nothing alike on the surface, the rare and raw blend is something wholly original and singular unto itself. Soul Visions is the new EP from The Human Experience and featuring the haunting vocal duet of sisters Chloe and Leah Smith. There is an evocative ease to the stirring pot of subsonic frequencies, plucked strings, and vast array of world percussion. Today's premiere, "Swoon," is an elegant ballad of intertwined lovers aching to please and satisfy and call in sick to stay in bed all day. We're pretty sure it's going to make you want to do the same damn thing. The album is out June 17th.

“The Human Experience” is David Block’s principal project as a live
electronic composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer. Listeners
experience a delicious symphonic blend of prismatic soundscapes and
sultry beats.

David is constantly pushing the boundaries of live electronic music. Playing, composing, and conducting his own electronic symphony live on stage, his performances are brimming and layered with human emotion, world exploration, and sacred sounds. Whether performing by himself, or with a live band, “The Human Experience” always delivers an emotionally charged show.

“The Human Experience” aims to cross cultural barriers through music. David has collaborated with artists all over the world including Ignacio Perez (Buena Vista Social Club), William Close (The Earth Harp), Random Rab, Govinda, Amae Love, Rising Appalachia, and many others.

Since his debut album “Inaudible Sounds” in 2010 , he has released nine other albums and has new projects planned for release in 2020.  Each song is a sonic journey; interweaving psychedelic layers of melody and harmony with organic grooves and international vibes.

Composing and performing live with the Audio/Visual/Dance projects “Phadroid” (Andrew and Phaedra Jones), “Quixotic”, “Lucent Dossier”, and “Seraphim” David is expanding his sounds into the mixed media world.

David has performed all over the world sharing the stage with renowned artists such as, Thievery Corporation, Bonobo, Tipper, Emancipator, The Polish Ambassador, and many more.

Over the last three years he has toured in UK, Europe, Russia, Israel, Central America, Canada, and all over the United States at a variety of events including festivals like Burning Man, Boom, Coachella, Electric Forest, Wakarusa, Lightning in a Bottle, Sonic Bloom, Symbiosis, and Envision.

His music has been featured on NBC prime time TV and is beginning to make its way into the world of cinema.

David is consistently redefining himself as an artist, performer, and human being. Moving and traveling around the world, meeting people from all walks of life and realms of consciousness, he is continually learning, growing, and sharing inspiration with those around him.
