"It's been raining in my city for three days. Last night I realized I didn't want it to stop.
I want it to rain so hard that we can never have another candlelight vigil. I want the pavement flooded so we can no longer lay in the street just to get people to stop and pay attention. I need the heavens to open up so that I can't tell who's crying, and who's laughing—because both reactions are honestly killing me.
I want it to rain forever.
I have so many thoughts racing through my mind. This post almost said: "If you have any humanity and decency in your hearts, you won't go to posts about Korryn Gaines and start debating the proper definition of the word "lynching," or demanding documentation of her harassment by Baltimore PD. You won't question why a Black woman in 2016 would barricade herself in her home in order to protect her children from the same people who killed Aiyana and Tamir, and got away with it. You won't defend the police in the state of Maryland, who just declared Freddie Grey severed his own spine, before letting all the cops walk free. You won't question the sister Korryn for wielding a firearm in a country that literally has more guns than people, and a Constitution declaring her right to do so."
I almost made that post.
But I realize I've already wasted too much energy trying to appeal to the sensibilities of white people. So instead I just want to reach out to Black people, and Black women in particular, and say I see you, and I feel you. And as we pass one another in the street today, or in the corridors at work, or make eye contact at the traffic light, please know that I understand the pain and grief lying just below the surface of your ever-poised demeanor. I wish there was a way to absorb that pain and that weight so that you didn't have to go through another day carrying it with you.
For what it's worth, some days the only thing that helps me know we'll get through this is a phrase that tends to loop through my mind when things become seemingly unbearable. The three words that tell me all I need to know. Three words that I have no choice but to believe...
