The Monster II: The Dragon (the Soundtrack)

This is a musical eulogy dedicated to my nephew, Anakin Luke Squance, and presented to his mother, my sister. I desperately wanted to write something for my sister, to show my love for her and my solidarity with her and my brother-in-law as they continue to go through their loss. 

This piece mainly focuses on praising the relationship of a mother and child, with a melody for the mother (1:00), a flute and then clarinet flow into one another symbolizing mother and child, and then a melody for Anakin himself (2:54). In between are two chords that flow over one another, symbolizing the mystery of this loss, searching for an answer.
At 4:17 we enter a new key, and the next stage of existence. At 6:05 we modulate again, this time into Eb Major, symbolizing yet a higher plane of existence for something as pure as a child, and here Anakin's melody now plays in full, at points mixed with the melody for my sister. I also chose Eb as it has 3 flats in its key signature, for the child and his two parents, permanently connecting them together. The piece then fades to the end.

Coming Down

This was written for mothers, but mainly for my wonderful mother, Donna Carter. The music begins with a mother's rise, her care and love, the growing and shifting that mothers do as their child grows, the chaos, and at times, strife we children give to our mothers, and through their patience and support, with flourish. And yet their work never ends, but resets the next day. I love you, mom.

Joshua Carter is a film composer, arranger, keyboardist and songwriter. Most recently he composed the overture to National Geographic's, "Symphony for Our World Live," tour. He has written arrangements for a wide range of artists across multiple genres including Ben Folds, Julie Roberts, Chris Young, Michael Johnathon and Maty Noyes. His arrangements have been performed by the Nashville Symphony, as well as several orchestras in Europe and Japan. Joshua studied composition at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio and orchestration for film and TV music through Berklee College of Music, Boston.
