Joe Keyes, born 1960, is a “Late Bloomer.” Throughout life, he has found music to be a steadfast source of healing. At the late age of 60 years old, in 2020 with an amazing group of young musicians we, Joe Keyes and The Late Bloomer Band are going to bring the healing power of music to the nations with full honor and respect to the great creators who brought this music to Joe. It’s past time for a new generation to lay down the hard drugs and reach new heights in music, building on the foundations of great musicians like, Miles Davis, Bennie Maupin, Gil Scott-Heron, Nona Hendryx, Joe Bowie (Defunkt) George Clinton, Parliament / Funkadelic, Sun Ra, Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin and Joe Keyes.

Joe Keyes is equal parts front man, poet and band conductor. The Freehold, NJ, native found his orchestra in late 2009 in The Late Bloomer Band, a rotating cast of Baltimore/DC-based musicians. The band takes audiences back to the days of Miles Davis and early P-Funk, when big bands were lead by strong forces of individuals. The band’s brand of live improvisation and musical sophistication presents a different experience at every show.

While Keyes draws inspiration from musical mentors Gil Scott-Heron and Sun Ra, The Late Bloomer Band brings a modern interpretation to funk, jazz, rock and a variety of other genres.

The Late Bloomer Band’s members, in their mid-20s, help keep 60-year-old Keyes young, and come from various Baltimore and D.C.-based bands. Having grown together musically, the band’s polished tightness has landed collaborations and live shows featuring original Fishbone members Angelo “Dr. Madd Vibe” Moore and Norwood Fisher.
