In celebration of George Harrison, I recorded this beautiful little song of his. Why didn't he release this as a single? It would've been a hit.

Jason NeSmith and I played, recorded and mixed this one at his Bel Air Studio in one llllloooonnnngggggg day in the fall of 2002.

I found this unreleased mix recently while wading through my archives. No drums! Go figure.

Drug Gods - FACE\OFF!
February 2008 

Drug Gods were the delightful, super awesome, and funny Matt Kurz and myself. Jeff Tobias had roped us into his FACE\OFF event. This was the second edition of the event. The FACE\OFF idea is thus... Jeff would pair two musicians who had never played with one another. Those two would create 10 minutes of material and then perform it live at the event.

I didn't really know Matt at all when I was paired with him, but Jeff assured me we would get along great. And he was so right!

Matt is a warm and affable dude. He has his own group called the Matt Kurz One. He's a one man band! He plays drums, guitar, bass and even a little keyboard all at the same time! Incredible. So I knew I was lucky. 

With about a week to go before the show, Matt and I started getting together. We practiced in his cinder block house on Pulaski. Nate Mitchell lives there now. It's the prototypical crappy Athens house of yore. Despite it kind of being a shithole, it is perfect because the rent is nothing and you can make a racket. Matt lived there by himself.

We discussed a little bit about what direction we should take it. It was decided I would play bass and Matt would play guitar and drums. We liked the idea of writing short bits and then stringing them all together into one 10 minute piece. Generally we'd spend maybe about 5 minutes coming up with an idea and then maybe 20 minutes figuring out how to play it. After we had a few pieces, we would then try to string them together. I brought my Zoom field recorder with me so we wouldn't forget!

The track presented here is a complete take of us doing the whole piece in practice. There is a recording of us doing it at Face\Off, but we fumbled a little bit, of course. Our brains got a little scrambled!

Oh yeah, Jeff named us Drugs Gods. We had no say in the matter. 

Matt and I had a blast making this silly piece. Hope you enjoy it.

In the Fall of 1989, I moved to Athens. John, my cousin convinced me to be his roommate in Creswell Hall on the UGA campus. John was best friends with Maureen who would very quickly become my girlfriend. Conveniently, she lived directly above me on the 4th floor. Her best friend and roommate was Debbie. And Debbie's boyfriend was Noel. We quickly formed a little music going posse. We saw an early performance by an Atlanta band called An Evening With The Garbagemen at the 40 Watt that Fall. We instantly fell in love with the group. Very soon after that show, the band added a bass player and changed their name to The Jody Grind. For the next couple of years, we went to every Jody Grind show we could. Most of these shows were with their friends the Opal Foxx Quartet and Deacon Lunchbox. I taped a few of these shows. You'll hear occasional chatter from us on this one. You'll also hear Noel's trademark, "Whoo!" Noel went on to become a notable music and movie critic. I have him to thank for introducing me to a ton of great bands.

Presented here is a show from February 3rd, 1990 at the recently reopened Georgia Theatre in Athens. They were opening for the Seven Simons that night. Later that week, they played a show at the Downstairs Cafe in Athens. I have that one recorded as well and hope to post it soon.

I don't want to go too much into it because it hurts too much, but tragedy befell the group in April of 1992. On the way back from a gig in Pensacola, the equipment van carrying Robert Hayes, Deacon Lunchbox and new drummer Robert Clayton was hit head on by a driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel. All three were killed. Kelly Hogan and Bill Taft had driven separately and were unaware of the tragedy until later that next morning. It still hits me as hard as the day I heard of the accident.

The Jody Grind were a fucking, great live band. They were always trying to stretch and reinvent the songs. I miss them greatly!
