First discovered Andrea aka Meilgaarden via a guest set at The Lot Radio, which came up on shuffle at a bar on a Tuesday night. It took the place to peaktime immediately. She's been all over Brooklyn since, with a regular radio show and party Sound Gymnastics. Her style is our favorite kind--tough, rock&roll vibes but also emotional, groovy, and overwhelmingly positive energy. You'll hear on first listen with this mix. 

"This is the set I played at Mood Ring for the last Sound Gymnastics party in May. I closed the night from 1:30-3am and I wanted to bring just the right vibe - interesting, not too soft, not too hard. It’s full of old school groovy trancy techno bangers mixed with tunes from my new favorite Scandinavian trance and techno labels - and of course acid gems in between."

Excited to welcome our good friend from across the pond, a selector's selector and legend of Dublin, Jio. Here he shares an opening set from Outra Cena in 2024, opening for RAMZI. It's a masterclass in range and pacing, perfect for soundtracking these first days of spring. 

Interview to come soon, but some words from Mr. Jio himself: 

"I just really feel I have the most to say when playing slower tempos and sort of having fun with layering melody and getting to be as eclectic as possible, as opposed to being sort of stylized. This mix is very stylistically all over the place, but I guess it's trying to find balance and beauty within all of that."

"Irish people have a conspiracy theory that the company that owns Guinness, Diageo, constructed [splitting the G] during COVID. Guinness is obviously very difficult to drink during COVID because you need pubs open, which they weren't. It was all takeaway. So what we said was that they came up with that as sort of an excuse, because you end up drinking the pint twice as fast, and you end up drinking a lot more. But unfortunately, the Brits were at it again, and London basically popularized it globally. And they, as you may have experienced from being there before, have the worst [pints] in the world, almost. It's very, very bad. And it seems quite hilarious that they're getting obsessed over a game and they don't even have the proper pint of liquid in their hand."

"I do feel that this idea of Irishness is something that prevails… it’s about being sort of humble, incredibly self-deprecating, but very welcoming… And it's something that I even find myself and Emma export a lot when we go abroad, you know? That kind of way, and how we interact and deal with people just naturally. People are like, oh, wow, people are usually a bit more closed and stuff. It's just not something that we ever consider. You know what I mean? It's just part of the way that we live every day here."

Jio - Can't Hack the Studio (Live from Outra Cena)

Level Mix 002 is brought to you by Brooklyn-based Dekalb Works, the collaborative project of Austin Peru (Vision Fortune) & our very own Daniel Creahan (Alien D). In Dan's words: "Last summer, we were invited by our loveable Level family to bring the project upstate for the yearly Glen Falls House weekender. Fortunately - the Tascam was running, and I’m so thrilled to release this one... [It's] got it all - guitars, heavy drones, a Tricky sample. The sky’s the limit."

Q: How much of your performances would you say are planned and how much are improvised? What's your setup look like and how often would you say it varies from gig to gig?

Our sets are almost completely improvised. We started experimenting with this for our Euro tour last summer for our last record, using Traktor to assemble, process and sequence loops. That program has a very sick effects bay and the mixing capabilities really makes for a nice system for assembling and flowing through stuff while also responding in real time to what's playing. 

Some of it was pulled from finished tracks (stems, loops, one shots etc), some are written between sets, so it's always evolving a bit. Dan will use those to move through different sets of arrangements, with Austin playing guitar and processing effects over that. There's also some other tracks we've used regularly for live sampling and grooves to sort of alternate between moments that feel very loose and open-ended and then more tracky, complete ideas to work off. Since then we've written a bunch of newer ideas and bits to work with. We'll also work in some more fully composed backing tracks to sort of reset or give a moment of cohesion to balance the flow out a bit. This has sort of become the default for how we've been playing live, but it's always an open-ended process based on how we're feeling.  

Q: How did you approach this set in particular? 

I think with this set we were pretty comfortable with the format described above as we'd played quite a bit in the month and a half before the set. We sort of got into the habit of this idea of a slow, building tension that occasionally resolves into moments that were more groove focused, so I think we had a nice template that we were working from for this one.
