Techno Snobs November 2024

Former military man and marching band member James Bangura is next up for #51 on our Tapes series. He’s an artist who has roamed the world and picked up musical influences at every stop on the way. Be it D&B in Alabama, blog house in California, or the rich house sound of New York, this Washington DC native is now distilling all those references into his own searing sounds. 
They have come on labels like Mister Saturday Night and can range from sauced out to brutally energetic. And the latter of those two is what defines his unrelenting mix for us. It is a hard-hitting collision of raw, decaying textures, pummeling drums, and stark, post-industrial atmospheres that are thrillingly harsh. The rhythms roam from the fringes of techno to the heart of jungle and on to icy but powerful minimalism that very much consumes your body. So strap in, cause this is one helluva ride.

Canadian powerhouse Barbosa is an electronic music artist who presents an experimental mixing style that blurs the lines between hypnosis and brutality. Since his start within the underground scene of Canada, Barbosa’s organic productions and highly unique sets quickly generated a platform for new creators to release their definitive productions on his imprint Heist Mode.

As his releases came out, there has been  widespread support from: Richie Hawtin, Amelie Lens, Dax J, Kobosil, Slam, SPFJD, MRD, 6am Group, HATE, and Voxnox. In 2021-2022, Barbosa played coast to coast in Canada and the U.S., with his Europe and South America debut set towards the end of the year.

As a continued effort to build a community with integrity, Barbosa held nine of his own label showcases in nine different cities across Canada and the U.S., with new artists that have been independently pushing their local scenes.

Stephen Disario has placed himself at the forefront of Los Angeles’s techno community with his signature style of moody, driving techno. Whether in the studio or behind the decks his sound is distinct, and his passion rings clear in his music. Stephen has also offered huge contributions to the Los Angeles scene by organizing events under the Cognition brand, which he co-founded in 2017, and through his involvement with H2Audio, a premier LA based sound company. He had his breakthrough year in 2020 with his track "Rave" gaining support from Amelie Lens, Pan Pot, and many others. Stephen continued to break the mold in 2021 with the release of "Pulse" which was constant rotation and found its way into Chris Liebing’s AM/FM podcast. 2023 sparked a new chapter with the launch of Conundrum Records, showcasing Stephen's unique sound as well as bringing on like-minded peers in the scene for releases and label showcases. You can catch Stephen playing at sweaty warehouses small and large as well as notable events like ADE, Boiler Room, CRSSD, and others.

Establishing his name as a fixture throughout the American Rave scene during the '90s, he became one of the most recognizable figures of the Electroclash movement during the early 2000s, his Rock & Pop remixes made him a key figure in the Blog House scene (’06-’09) and helped set the stage for the EDM boom of the 2010s. 31 years as a DJ and 37 years as a clubber gives Sunshine his unique perspective on the business & informs his present Rave Revival sound.
Set apart by his iconoclastic productions, he is regarded as one of today!s most prolific remixers providing club-ready makeovers for countless household names, including Billie Eilish, Bob Marley, Katy Perry, Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Kim Petras, Nicki Minaj, Rosalía, Dua Lipa, Sofi Tukker, Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Presley, Lizzo, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kelly Clarkson, Major Lazer, Santana, and Fall Out Boy. His TV show After The Raves on Netflix took him around the world speaking intimately with Fatboy Slim, Solardo, Hardwell and Paul Oakenfold, and his deep musical knowledge and outspoken views have landed him airtime on numerous talk shows and radio programs. Sunshine, also known as a social media provocateur, has been known to cause an uproar in his firm stance on many issues most won't dare talk about & his activism has landed him on TMZ for gun control. Tommie served as an entertainment surrogate for the 2016 & 2020 Presidential campaigns of Bernie Sanders.
