Refuge Worldwide co-founder and programmer Richard Akingbehin joined me in celebrating 200 episodes of Passing Notes. Originally founded in 2015 as a fundraising platform, Refuge Worldwide launched in 2021 as an independent community station broadcasting 24/7 from their home in Neukolln. Although somewhat newly ‘On Air’ and providing an internationally loved artist to airway connection, Refuge remains, at its core, a community platform. Refuge prioritises amplifying the voices of marginalised artists, continues its community outreach efforts, connects people to current affairs and provides a space for community to share, grow and learn. There’s no doubt that Refuge Worldwide remains aligned with its foundational ethos: to foster unity in the community.

Beyond the Berlin-based broadcaster, Richard’s contributions to the world of music are multifaceted and far reaching. As a versatile DJ, Richard has made appearances spanning the breadth of the European club and festival scene (think Waking Life, Berghain, Melt and more). Richard also lovingly curates the Kynant record label which showcases the experimental sides of ambient, dub and techno. Notably, Richard kicked off his sublabel ‘Kyant Ex’ with a release from Passing Notes favourite, UK experimental band O Yuki Conjugate’s. When he’s not playing, programming or curating music, Richard connects listeners with artists through storytelling - His journalistic prowess, often demonstrated in the form of longform interviews and articles, often grace the pages and readers of heavyweight publications such as Resident Advisor.

‘1 of the microhouse events, that took the name Space Edition, and hosted the Canadian Mathew Jonson, a member of Cobblestone Jazz, and 1 of the founders of Wagon Repair record label. That evening, Mathew divided the music area with Donato Dozzy, a resident DJ and famous today in the international electronic scene. In this recording, Dozzy is playing at the opening, while the set of Jonson, is in the central part. There are 3 or 4 jumps in the track, because that night the recorder had some problems’.

Cosmo at Outro Lado - Waking Life '24

fleika grew up during the heyday of Prague’s rave culture, coming of age as a DJ in booths built for a single night only. The Czech techno renaissance formed him, then the newly-born club culture embraced him as one of its main protagonists. The Ankali resident digs anything that kicks, melts or makes one’s mind trip, but mainly thrives on diving into the vast depths of hypnotic and psychedelic techno – as deep as it gets.

fleika shared a few words about the mix:
"I always enjoy having enough time to express myself, whether at live events or on podcasts. An hour is barely enough to dive into my favorite places. In this mix, I kept it groovy while exploring deeper territories, reflecting my outlook on life in general."

Mary Yuzovskaya's mix for Delayed captures her defining approach to techno: raw, hypnotic, and unhurried. As a vinyl-only DJ with roots in Berlin's techno underground and a significant stretch in New York's scene, she shapes her music with precision, offering an hour-long set that feels both intimate and intense. This mix is crafted for those who get lost in the beat, whether booming from Berghain's Funktion-One system or spinning in your headphones on a midnight walk.

During her years in NYC, Mary's sound took on new depth, honed through a three-year residency with the Unter collective and work at Brooklyn's Halcyon record shop, where she later launched her label, Monday Off. Dedicated to "psychedelic techno," Monday Off became a home for artists who push beyond the genre's usual limits. Through her label, Mary has amplified a vision of techno that doesn't rely on trends but thrives on nuance and a deliberate, mind-bending drive.

Back in Berlin, Mary's reach grows, with regular gigs at clubs like Berghain and Tresor or Munich's Rote Sonne, NYC's Basement, and releases on respected labels like Semantica, Attic, Kvalia, and her own Monday Off. This mix for Delayed shows how she keeps the music tightly focused yet open to exploration—an hour that reflects her journey, rooted in vinyl and built for techno's true devotees.

An electrical charge runs through everything Lucinee transmits. Her productions and DJ sets bristle with peak-time urgency - a rush of volatile synth lines and thunderous drums wrangled from hardware exploration. These sparks can easily ignite huge spaces - festival arenas, the great techno institutions of the world - but they also carry subtlety and balance which looks for something deeper than the one-dimensional banger.

Born and based in Berlin, Lucinee has earned her respected position within the techno scene by investing herself in the fundamentals of club culture, holding down a long-standing residency at iconic Hamburg club PAL, and making notable appearances at Boiler Room in Warsaw and Berghain’s fabled Säule along the way.

Her productions serve as a natural extension of her open approach to DJing - vibrant jams comfortably housed on labels from Berlin institution BPitch through to EXHALE, Voxnox and Space Trax, just to name a few. In her hands, the tenets of classic trance, techno, and industrial are handled with exacting poise, drawing on their immersive, psychoactive power to create a trip as subtle as it is impactful.

Lucinee’s music has garnered support from key figures in the industry, including Amelie Lens, Ellen Allien, Nur Jaber, Boris, Monika Kruse, and many others, underscoring her influence within the global techno landscape.

A true legend and pioneering figure of techno, US sound architect and Geophone label owner Mike Parker breaks in on the RYC waves with a very special set full with his idiosyncratically dark, obsessive, inch-perfectly chiselled 4x4 wares. Before Boiler Room and co. were even a thing, a pioneering platform going by the name of Studio R° used to broadcast techno sets by prominent artists from a secret location in Berlin. This iconic, vinyl-only mix is Parker’s Studio R° set from 2013, now fully remastered for your listening pleasure. Building atmospheres unlike any other, brooding and transcending in equal measure, Parker has laid the foundation to an exceptionally rich body of work. Master of the industrial vocab, peeping towards Detroit but with his defining spin on the early days genre, Parker entices us down the path of steely monumentality and laser-precise mind control. Just as typically mazy, his present mix conjures up all traits of quality Parker material: 909-powered propulsion, enslaving acid whorls, Escher-like fractals. Wild, wild ride ahead.

A Brief Utopia (A project by Jinjé) A Brief Utopia was born from an EP released earlier this year by Jinjé (aka, Lee J Malcolm from Vessels) on Scene Unseen. Stepping away from his usual production duties and focusing more on his passion for live drumming and percussion instruments. This was the starting block for much of the composition on the this record. He quickly realised that this would be a brilliant thing to do live and reached out to fellow musicians Danny Templeman (Submotion Orchestra, Gentleman’s DubClub) and Nathan Moseley (Fwar, Brolin) to put together a high energy show aimed at clubs and festivals alike.A Brief Utopia brings a colourful, vibrant and visually engaging experience. Drawing on a love of music from around the world focused through a lens of live drumming, tuned percussion and psychedelic synth work.
