Terra - Part 3- Before Dawn

Berlin-based DJ Vera presents a new ambient project entitled ‘Terra’. Consisting of three individual chapters, Terra is a musical audio play that tells the story of a night in the rainforest. Paying homage to dear planet Earth, mother nature’s unmistakeable beauty and endless peculiarities come rising to the fore. 

A sprawling journey into the great unknown, each mix takes the listener progressively through a myriad of wild and liminal spaces. Spanning all corners of ambient, avant garde, and experimental electronics, to ethno, Jazz, and beyond, Terra lavishes everything from moments of quiet introspection, spacey drones, chugging beats, hypnotic rhythms and select climactic peaks. 

Carefully woven together as a multi-dimensional tapestry of sound, scenes transition gradually between environments, moods, and states. As the night progresses, forms shift endlessly under moonlit sky, and subtle shades of every kind make their stroke before the sun breaks free once again. 

An intoxicating trip through dense jungle paths, untouched rivers and deep mountain valleys, we dive headfirst into Vera’s kaleidoscopic world of unusual creatures and bewitching natural phenomena. Uncovering the weird, forgotten, and mysterious, Terra invites the listener to co-create the rainforest as an imagined space and to discover the storyteller within. 

Terra started as an earnest musical exploration, but through collaboration and further development Vera hopes to unlock its greater potential as a communal arts platform and ongoing multidisciplinary project. With this audio play as the starting point, who knows what the next chapters will bring...

Search and Resistance in "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"
In Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," the striking repetition of "Everybody's looking for something" highlights a universal search for satisfaction, but also highlights the frustration of desires that always seem unattainable. Annie Lennox revealed that the lyrics emerged in a moment of despair and nihilism, which is reflected in the disenchanted worldview presented in the song: sweet dreams are made of expectations and illusions that everyone chases, with no guarantee of fulfillment.
The lines "Some of them want to use you / Some of them want to get used by you / Some of them want to abuse you / Some of them want to be abused" expose the dynamics of power and manipulation in human relationships. They suggest that, in the search for satisfaction, people can either exploit or submit to others. The chorus "Hold your head up, movin' on" serves as advice to preserve dignity and carry on, even in the face of uncertainty and exploitation. The context of the composition, marked by the personal and professional difficulties of the Eurythmics members, reinforces the song's tone of resignation and resilience, which has become a symbol for those facing adversity and needing to continue searching for meaning amidst chaos.

Over the past 22 years I have been recording & adding to a mixtape series begun in 1998 in San Francisco. I started putting together selections from the deeper, “late night” end of my record collection that almost never made their way onto regular DJ mixtapes we were all making in the late nineties. Back in the day before Uber, all those after-hours minicab rides in London were sound tracked by African & Caribbean pirate radio stations playing the most incredible Downtempo Soul, R&B, Roots and Gospel. For me, the better the DJ, the slower BPM they would have the guts to play. And here in London even today, generally speaking, the blacker the party, the slower the music (and inevitably, the hotter the vibes)…a simple equation really. This 40 hours worth of music features tracks from every genre and every era……the only thing they all have in common is that they would sound pretty dam good at 8am Sunday morning in the back of a minicab on Coldharbour Lane.

After starting the mini Dekmantel Selectors podcast series two years ago, it feels like a tradition to bring it back to life. In the next couple of months, we will release 6 podcasts by some of the exciting artists from the line-up. This year’s podcasts challenges the artists to work around a theme or idea they picked theirselves. Next up: Dekmantel label member Tom Trago.

Trago can be seen as one of the main key players of Amsterdam's nightlife. Having grown up in a musical family, he picked up on his love for music really fast and has been making music from the age of 15 ever since. A collaboration with Aardvarck and Awanto3, a debut single on Rush Hour and many DJ-sets worldwide followed, which made Trago the acclaimed musician he is today. Earlier this month we had the honour to release Trago’s newest LP 'Bergen', which was made in the same-titled village in The Netherlands and sees him putting out music through a new live set-up.

In anticipation of Dekmantel Selectors, Trago cooked up a special mix for us containing lots of disco and summer-vibes. "This mix is dedicated to those late summer nights and early mornings. Mostly tracks that i play when i feel that there is freedom and acceptance among the crowd. A lot of home listenings jams And easy groovers. Sit back And relax!".
