Bézier returns to Dark Entries with Valencia, a six track rumination on memory, geography, and transmutation. Multi-instrumentalist Robert Yang’s Bézier project has appeared on Dark Entries many times over the last decade, most recently with the 2018 LP Parler Musique. Says Yang, “What started as a project to investigate the love of the sound and scenery while living in San Francisco quickly developed into a passionate search for interlocking melodies and driving rhythms.”
 On Valencia, Bézier invokes twinned places. The Valencia Street of San Francisco is channeled, which was the center of the city’s vibrant new wave scene in the 1980s. 
But also echoed is Valencia, Spain, and La Ruta del Bakalao aka La Ruta Destroy, the Spanish clubbing scene throughout the 80s and 90s famed for its aggressive and synthetic sounds. Valencia is a darker record for Yang, exploring themes of submission and catharsis with nods to SF’s gay leather bars of the 70s and 80s. The high BPM salvos of “Valencia” and “Scrupulous” capture the frantic energy of Bakalao and Valencian wave acts like Última Emoción. Elsewhere Yang mines the dreamy space disco and Hi-NRG sounds they’re known for, like on the brooding “Past the Marshes” or the anthemic “Reservoir”, which features their partner Len.Leo on vocals. Bézier deftly navigates past and present, light and dark, pain and pleasure, the stasis of memory and the flux of time. 
Valencia was mastered by Alex Michalski, with EQ for vinyl done by George Horn. Gwenael Rattke designed the sleeve, which features an 80’s punk zine-esque geometric grid pattern mirroring San Francisco street maps. Also included is a 5x7 postcard with notes.

Next up is a pioneer and key figure in the Colombian techno scene. The Bogota-born, Barcelona based artist has been mesmerizing audiences with her mental techno journeys for quite some time now. After honing her impressive skills behind the wheels of steel in her hometown of Bogota, Adriana relocated to Spain in 2003 and has since won the hearts of fans around Europe and beyond in the countless places she's played, among them DGTL Festival (Barcelona, Madrid), Village Underground (London), Faust and Vurt (Seoul), Vent (Tokyo), Berghain and Tresor (Berlin). Her imprint Grey Report stands for absolute quality in techno, just like the numerous releases she has had over the years, including Modularz, Semantica, PoleGroup, Stoboscopic Artefacts and many more.

Swedish producer based in Gothenburg. This Swedish entity contributed to live, real and in circumstantial surroundings. Mr. Eargoggle has a huge impact on the electro scene. Grown up listening to the electro funk sound of Egyptian Lover and similar funkateers, Luke Eargoggle, aka Lukas Pettersson, now lives by the beach in Sweden where he makes music in peace. Luke maintains the record label Stilleben Records and released some of his ultra funky electro tracks through Dutch label Bunker Records, German label Kommando 6 and more.
Especially for our podcast, Luke recorded an exclusively vinyl set.

FRANCOIS DILLINGER [Ben Worden] glides between the two worlds of electro and techno. His journey through the genres is dark while retaining a cerebral, dancefloor-oriented quality. This stems from influences of Industrial, Detroit electro, and even Ghettotech that were a part of his first explorations as a DJ in Detroit. In the studio, Francois uses primarily all external hardware and modular gear, utilizing Ableton for final arrangements and editing. His Live & DJ sets lean heavily into the generation of hypnotic loops, creating long protracted mixes between elements to form unshakeable tension. As a former promoter, long-time performer, and supporter of the scene – he’s been a part of the Detroit community for over 20 years.
 
In 2021, DILLINGER released three albums—two on vinyl and one on cassette. He was featured on several VA’s, most notably on Planet_e’s Detroit Love compilation. Over 30 artists remixed his tracks in the last year including the likes of Keith ‘K1’ Tucker, Detroit’s Filthiest, Jensen Interceptor, Pip Williams (of London Modular Alliance), Luxus Varta and others. As a remixer himself, he’s garnered DJ support from the likes of Dave Clarke and DJ Stingray. The 2022 release calendar is already full of new remix projects, and EPs on labels like AVOIDANT (Soma Records), Mannequin Records and others.
 
Detroit’s Deep Space Radio hosts FRANCOIS’s resident podcast on the network, which broadcasts new episodes monthly. MINDFRAME, is part of a conceptual series of albums and projects from DILLINGER—each episode on DSR features guest artists and interviews and has showcased his own live and DJ sets as well.  

Especially for our podcast, Francois recorded a meditative immersion with his trademark complex intricacies.

Strange But Dance Music #69: FRANCOIS DILLINGER

Mistareez was live this morning with two hours full of experimental, downtempo and ambient tracks.

My inspiration for this mix comes from my languid, tipsy, smiley memories of day parties I have spent under the sun. The sun, which is the source of all life on earth, including the plants and animals whose gifts we eat, is constantly present in my associations around food as well as the rave. There are two kinds of day parties I held in my heart when I made this mix. One is the kind where you are sweating your ass off and meditatively dancing in front of a sound system that some gracious friends lugged to some sweltering outdoor location. The other is the kind where twelve of your favorite people have brought gifts of full tupperware to a destination picnic blanket (or folding table), and it is the longest day of the year (there's probably a body of water nearby).

Like many others, I felt a deep spiritual loss when we were unable to gather and rave when the pandemic began. During those early days of summer 2020, I began to rely on the practice of outdoor meals with my chosen Korean family to give me the extra dose of communal pleasure I needed to make it through. The recipe I chose is less of a recipe, and more of a framework, for my preferred way of executing such an outdoor Korean gui party. Gui is an active, communal dining practice where everyone is cooking, eating, and drinking together and at the same time around the same table. It doesn't have to be outdoors, but I think it's best that way. You will need some kind of apparatus for cooking your food that everyone can sit around. I always use a butane gas camping stove and a separate flat griddle or large cast iron pan. As well, you will need tongs and a pair of kitchen shears for cutting the grilled foods into bite size pieces for everyone to take directly from the grill. I hope my mix will make a good companion for your gui, either as something to listen to while you prep, or while you feast.

Ingredients per 4 people

Things to grill: (any combination of the following totaling at least 3 pounds)
Thick pork belly slices (1/4")
Ribeye or sirloin steaks
Thinly sliced brisket
Beef short rib (cut into thin strips, bone removed)
Thick king oyster mushroom slices (1/4")
Enoki mushrooms torn apart into small bundles.
Raw garlic cloves
Mild peppers
2 heads of red leaf lettuce and/or Korean perilla leaves
1 lb. kimchi or pickles of any kind
4 cups cooked white rice
A bottle of toasted sesame oil
Salt and black pepper
A tub of ssamjang
Soju or other dry spirit

Instructions:

Wash and separate all lettuce and perilla leaves and fan out on a large platter.
Set the table by placing the butane stove and griddle in the center of the dining surface such that everyone can reach it.
Arrange the grillable ingredients and the kimchi on a platter near the grill.

For each individual diner, set out an empty serving plate, a cup of rice, a portion of ssamjang (about 2 tablespoons), and a small shallow dish with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and a teaspoon each of salt and pepper.
Have the youngest person pour a shot of soju for everyone.

Designate a grill master to cook the grillable ingredients. The grill master should grill the fattiest meat items first so that the pan gets greasy. Cut them into bite size pieces as they approach doneness and deliver fully cooked pieces to each diner's plate.

Once you have some food on your plate, take a lettuce or perilla leaf and place a dollop of rice in the center. Dip your grilled food in the sesame oil/salt/pepper mixture, and then place on top of the rice. Add a piece of kimchi. Add a little smidgen of ssamjang. Wrap all the components into a little bundle with the leaf. Eat the entire bundle in one bite!

Toast and take a shot of soju together.

Rotate grill master whenever they need some time to focus on eating.
Repeat steps 5 - 9 until you're too full and drunk to cook any longer!

L.I.E.S. Records NTS Show 38, June 2022

I'm working on a live set for later in the year. This is just a quick live play through of some ideas. I'm using Ableton's performance pack and Sting 2 both created by a great Ableton user called Iftah. The idea is to use the performance pack to map a lot of sound shaping tools to my midi controller and use some randomisation to take care of some of the variations. Please like or comment.
