Recently joining the UK-based label All Centre as co-head alongside Simkin and DJ Pitch, Sobolik has been turning heads over the last few years with their futuristic club cuts on labels such as 3024 and early reflex. Hailing from New York, Sobolik's world is filled with colour and hyperkinetic energy - not fitting in one box, their output can span across UK-influenced soundscapes of UKG and weighty bass rhythms to glistening, rolling techno anthems which can be found on their recent All Centre release. A producer very much on the rise, Sobolik is one of our ones to watch out for in 2022, we're so excited to see what they get up to next! 

Speaking about their contribution to our series, Sobolik says, "this mix basically sums up where my head is at musically these days, both from the records i've been listening to and dj sets i've enjoyed recently from the likes of lychee & aaron j, aurora halal & ron like hell, sharlese, plo man, sister zo, and zoe mcpherson. i feel like each of these sets i got to experience in the past three weeks presented such a compelling and deep narrative that colored in and around the lines of 'straightforward' techno, and inspired me to rethink how you can blend together tracky/functional and more offbeat material to tell a compelling story in a set. this mix throws together a lot of disparate styles to hopefully stitch together something that's equally heady as it is danceable, and also includes a few juicy forthcoming bits from friends & comrades :)"

Currently based in Vancouver, BC, Adam 2 (@adamtwo) is a DJ, producer, organizer, and perhaps above all, a devotee of the dancefloor. They are the kind of person who's likely to have a meet-cute story with a surprising number of your friends from everywhere in the world (we met over a popsicle in the front row of No Way Back once upon a time). They bring the same spirit of community and giving they bring to the dancefloor to their engagement with the music community, most recently through their label @pprzrecords with DJ Hockey and their Afrofuturism is NOW mix series.

"So for mixes usually, I’ll find a few songs which have a common narrative/story. Then with that narrative in mind, I'll think about what the start and the end of the story sound like and do I have songs which I can use for the start and the end. I’ll usually then split the mix into 2-3 parts (3 parts for a recorded mix, 2 parts for a live performance) and each part will have the same shared theme but different energy levels.

For this one, I had a few electro tracks which weren’t really based on phrases, but were long and evolving, so I could mix them as textures kinda like how I would mix techno. There is a mix of electro/bass/techno throughout, however I purposely tried to avoid songs with 4x4 kick patterns.

In terms of a narrative I envisioned a soundtrack to a science fiction movie, recounting a story of a journey gone wrong, and elements known (science) vs. elements unknown (religion/ritual). It is always interesting to reflect on when a mix was recorded and how it reflects that period of time; for me it reflects a period of Winter, an ongoing pandemic and a bleak view of the future. I wouldn’t be able to record the same mix now because I am in such a different place emotionally and musically compared to a few months ago.

It was honestly so fascinating while writing the interview for this mix series to realize I’d come full circle and I was playing electro again but in a new way, after discovering it years ago and leaving it behind after getting so tired of it."

Spontaneous Affinity #045: Adam 2

South London’s hidden gem Softi (fka Jazz) takes us down the rabbit hole into a dream-like underworld that weaves between different textural environments. From meditative dub to twisting experimental club music, the mix seamlessly flows through tracks from the likes of Soreab, Kincaid, Cousin, Laughing Ears, and CCL. 

Hosting the Cozi radio shows on Balamii and Rinse FM as well as frequently playing on Kindred, Jazz recently took Cozi into the club sphere. Teaming up with local London promoters Terra Obscura and Local Knowledge, the trio hosted an incredible party at Ormside Projects, booking Kia, Yumi b2b Amelia Holt and GiGi alongside resident with the night starting as a ‘cozy’ ambient/downtempo listening session. The dreamiest programming! 

Launching the Softi moniker with this mix, the dynamic DJ is certainly one to watch. With her soundscape firmly rooted within psychedelic realm, you will be able to catch Softi at the Waterworks E1 afterparty this weekend as well as Or:la’s Phoenix Residency and Corsica Studios in October. Not to be missed! 🐰✨
