Andrew Smith aka Jasen Loveland aka infinity was the embodiment of the spirit of No Way Back and Return to the Source, his energy, his neon colors, his front and center nature was such a core element of these parties. In 2019 he showed up to the party with a shirt he ordered off the internet that was a collage of all these pictures he had done of the Interdimensional Transmissions logo, it was so over the top, no one could stop talking about it. The statement was so clear, he was here, and he was all about this. During the night almost every DJ played some of his music, I remember Derek Plaslaiko playing 5 of his songs that night. He was floating on air, I bumped into him on the dance floor and he was just glowing. It was like he was having a private concert of his own music with a few thousand friends. It was pure magic. 

He became a part of these parties, creating art for them. During the streams and after I had lost my father, he made sure to call me all the time and check in. That really meant so much to me. We’d have long incredible discussions, sometimes very spiritual. When the first streaming No Way Back happened at the beginning of lockdown, he made these over the top animations for us of the shirts and products we were making. They were a hit in the stream and some are still on our instagram. 

When we lost him only days before the 2021 stream, it was too much to process. Anger, sadness and just that incredible loss of a true head and magic spirit. So we broadcast this set he had recorded for Miguel Senquiz only a week before, and had Andrew Charles Edman process the video. A patch he created for Touch Designer was used for his and many videos in the No Way Back Streaming From Beyond 2021 broadcast. He was and always will be an integral part of what we do, and here we remember him with this video and mix, and have dedicated all of Return to the Source 2022 to him. Forever Jase.

Influences: 
As far as dance music, early progressive and psy through to newer proggy clubbier stuff, a lot of which is coming out of Melbourne! More broadly, I grew up on a lot of psych rock from the 60s & 70s, and I can feel that influencing my taste in dance music as I gravitate towards driving, whimsical, trancey sounds.

I'm currently recording the first EP for my new psych rock project Milou Moon (@milou_music) set to release September 2023. Stay tuned! I also DJ at parties around Melbourne sometimes- this mix is actually based on a set I played recently at around 2am at a park party.

aka-Sol (@acaciabaila) is an Ecuadorian DJ, producer, and multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn. Through their Acacia Baila label, they're also a connector: they've released their own tracks and collaborations alongside releases from their friends and community, as well as thrown events at spaces like Mansions and their involvement in the Dripping event series and festival. As a DJ, their sets are genre-defying and psychedelic, bridging the gap between heady, trippy sounds and groove and percussion that go straight to the body. Their mix for us is deftly controlled chaos — a fresh, freaky take on 'fast' that's as floating and expansive as it is frenetic.

"I wanted to create a mix exploring the 150-160 bpm pocket. I feel like I have only landed in playing around these tempos a few times while DJing live, and had definitely not recorded a mix up there before. I was itching to submerge into it after a crucial year in my DJ career, where I have widely expanded the limitations of the things I feel comfortable playing.

It’s been refreshing to understand more and more that I am not an artist/DJ that could be defined by a music genre, but rather by the sensibility in which I lace the different styles and sounds I use to create narratives when constructing my sets. Another important challenge I presented to myself for recording this mix was the curiosity of understanding what kind of tunes I would select and blend for this as a non DnB nor hard techno DJ. I feel like by going through this challenge, I have opened a world of possibilities that I can’t wait to incorporate when playing out there.

In terms of feelings explored, I would say that expansiveness of the body and the mind are a recurrent element in my practice and it was very present in this mix too. I wanted to build something that could feel both complex yet fluid. Entering into deeper introspections while feeling your body being pulled in all possible directions at once until the point of surrendering into a floating state of slow movements is the only possible solution to cope with the amount of information being received.

In terms of gear, I used 2 Pioneer XDJ-700s and a Pioneer DJM 450 mixer. For the recording I use a Zoom H6 recorder."

"There are books about techno and rave, but let's fill in the blanks." The scholar and activist talks about her book Raving, bringing club culture into academia and more.

McKenzie Wark, professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the New School, is a scholar and raver who has written extensively about the world of dance music and its surrounding subculture. Most recently, Wark penned Raving, a first-person account of her experiences in the Brooklyn queer and trans rave scene. Wark's writing is a unique blend of memoir and literary criticism, and Raving takes readers straight into the heart of undisclosed locations around New York nightlife. Raving to techno is an art and a technique at which queer and trans bodies might be particularly adept, she writes—but it's also for anyone who lets the beat seduce them.

In her conversation with the Brooklyn-based DJ Alyce Currier, AKA Lychee, Wark talks about how the book came to be. She explains how entire chapters of the book wrote themselves out in her head, and how she carefully chose 26 characters—all of which have a letter as a name—to represent the friends and acquaintances of hers from the world of queer nightlife. Her own relationship with raving started when she was still living in Australia. At the time, she says, she hadn't yet transitioned and was experiencing an ambient sense of gender dysphoria that only dancing and nightlife could placate. She didn't actually transition until she was in her late 50s, in 2017. "After I went on hormones, I couldn't write," she says. "But the pressure [to write Raving] was enabling, and I found my voice in this book."

Wark and Currier also talk about what it means to bring club culture into academia, working with fellow rave scholar madison moore and how parties can serve the communities they're designed to cater to instead of exacerbating existing social structures that already exist. Thought I’d take this opportunity at The Great Beyond this year to record a sunrise set driven by some of my favorite melodic electro tunes ever. Many which I’ve been playing for 20+ years.

For our 905th RA Podcast, we're proud to welcome Goldie, one of the most famous, talented and important electronic music artists of all time. Starting out as a graffiti artist, he eventually made music under the name Rufige Kru, helping push the then-nascent genre of jungle forward with tracks like "Krisp Biscuit (Power)" and "Terminator." The latter was released under the name Metalheads, which would later become the name of his label (with a z instead of an s). Metalheadz—which he cofounded with DJ Storm and the late Kemistry—celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and remains the defining outlet of drum & bass, the genre that grew out of jungle that Goldie helped invent with records like 1995's massive crossover album Timeless (alongside countless other classics). He's a producer, DJ, actor and all-around celebrity, a huge personality in UK electronic music.

Goldie is also RA's guest curator this month, and his tenure starts with this mix. We'll have more to come starting this week—check our editor's letter later today for more information—but for now, here's a survey of drum & bass past and present from a man who helped invent the genre. With plenty of new Metalheadz material plus a healthy dose of older tracks, these two hours lay out the history of Metalheadz, drum & bass and its various subgenres, from twinkling liquid to rumbling techstep. It's the first part of a month celebrating Goldie's legacy, and we can't wait to show you the rest.

DJ Yazi has been active since the mid-1990s,  as a member of Tokyo’s notoriously avant-garde hip hop group called Think Tank. The record label Black Smoker Records founded by the group took their experimentalism to a series of club nights called El Nino, and DJ Yazi remains its resident for two decades. Drawing inspiration from across the musical spectrum: the mentality of hip hop, the intensity of dub and jazz, the ferocity of techno and the euphoria of house. As a DJ he moves fluidly across styles, with his sets connected by a strong focus on deep and tripped out grooves. His attention to details, precision and masterful control over the decks clearly show his long time involvement in this art form. He also performs with Haruka as Twin Peaks, an improvisational live/ DJ hybrid act. He currently hosts a regular techno/ industrial themed night called Konvektion at Contact, Tokyo together with Takaaki Itoh. After appearing in a Tokyo satellite event series New Assembly presented by Berlin Atonal in early 2017, he caught the attention of the festival directors, and made his European debut in Berlin playing Herrensauna at Tresor and Berlin Atonal 2017.
