Gia Fu is a DJ, selector, and radio host based in Hong Kong. She primarily focuses on digging and spinning salsa and mambo gems everywhere she goes, also diving deep into all Afro-Latin music, disco and house grooves. She runs the Mild Mambo Club show, often on Rinse FM, and is an enigma in Hong Kong, mostly DJing at salsa festivals and congresses outside of Hong Kong until the pandemic. 

"I decided to go on a little research journey for this mix because even though I am all dedicated to the Afro-Latin genres and the social (salsa) dance scene, some parts of me are still curious about the music I grew up with. My parents actually met because of social dancing. My mom was a dance teacher in Shanghai and Beijing who teaches ChaCha (cha-cha-chá) and all kinds of social dances for upper class people to be able to dance in social dances. So I began to dig Chinese records of Chacha songs that my parents used to dance. Exploring this music, I felt connected to my parents almost as if we are/were living in a Parallel World - at the same time, it relates back to the genres that I am passionate about and I get to explore the connection and influence in between Afro-Latin music and Chinese music."

Music is about sharing and I couldn't have been more honored than to have my good friend Ripperton share the decks with me. This was our very first together and it didn't disappoint. I would even say all tracks were on point, at least to us. We had so much pleasure listening to each other's selection and drinking many beers to wash down that bright sunshine heat before the rain broke and the dance floor turned into a rain dance celebration. It was a memorable night and I hope it shows through this recording.

Tommy Stewart is an important underground figure for the funk music. Born in 1939…he was drawn to music at early age thanks to his mother. In 1964 he played with Fred Wesley and members of the 55th Army band. He wrote and composed for TV and even played with Blue Note recording artist Duke Pearson. In 1973 he arranged and composed a musical score called “The Burning of Atlanta” and later on, worked as arranger, producer, performer and writer for the likes of Clarence Carter, Candi Staton, Johnny Taylor, Major Lance, Eddie Kendricks, Luther Ingram, Millie Jackson, Flip Wilson, Roy Gaines, Tamiko Jones and many others. His self titled LP and sophomore follow up as Stevo, has Stewart often labeled as an innovator of disco-funk….but on my books he is a funk master…enjoy the show

How deep can you go? Well, you better ask Japanese master Jank! Jank is another example of these “hidden gems”, but releasing on labels like City Fly, Mysterious Works and Boogie Café says it all. The “Piece of ballad ep” on Quintessentials is super deep and emotional House music. Keeping the BPM low and adding soul power and a jazzy laidback feel make these 3 tunes massive.
