Thomas Newman is my favourite contemporary Hollywood composer, an auteur with glowing moods and textures. For many years Newman's scores have accompanied me, there’s a warm melancholy and sentimentalism, but then a coolness, experimental, never the stuffiness that can occur in the realms of Hollywood scoring. Newman uses unorthodox instruments and there's these emotive shifts; so precise to each film, creating their own bubble and what threads all the scores together is this Newman sound of wonder, beautiful and exciting. It’s pure movie feelings! Coming from a Hollywood composing dynasty - one of the most important in film music history; the tree includes his cousin Randy Newman and Alfred his father, a key player of The Golden Age - he’s soundtracked some of the most iconic films and TV of the 90s-00s alongside quiet indies and cult classiques. I smile every time I hear his work at the titles. Too many moments to get into BUT recently a special fondness for ‘Flesh and Bone’ (Dir. Steve Kloves, 1993, stunning 1st half) that’s been on repeat all year and TV movie ‘Those Secrets’ (Dir. David Manson, 1992, oddball gem). This mix is aptly titled ’Spökets sommar’ - which translates as ’The ghosts's summer' - encapsulating the style and timbre of Moonilena’s music and DJ sets. To be enjoyed in eternity!

Episode number 52 is "hard-boiled" by an outstanding artist from the medieval city of Utrecht -  Tala Drum Corps. Being a creator in the field of audio and interaction design Tijmen combines many musical incarnations, including but not limited to his own tape experiments and the building of dub sirens and curation of Stranded FM. In his music and mixes, he gravitates more towards a chthonic palette including spooky dub, captivating and otherworldly percussions, mumblecore illbient, hypnotizing mermaid trance, mnemonic electro, Arrakis kraut and who knows what else! This mix was no exception, which makes me very happy as the curator of De Kat Memwa series! After listening to the mix for the first time, I was naturally sweating from the buzz!

I have been a long-time fan of the work of Tala Drum Corps, but for some reason, I was too shy to write for some time. When I finally overcame my shyness, we were very quickly able to meet in real life and hold an amazing joint dance event in Malmö. In short, it is a great happiness to find new friends and like-minded people through music!
