Advice for the DJs, artists and producers of our community: Continue breaking down oppressive structures and contributing to structures that support and cherish life and well-being, keeping in mind a statement by Ruth Wilson Gilmore: “Abolition is about presence, not absence. It has to be green, and in order to be green, it has to be red (anti-capitalist), and in order to be red, it has to be international.” Doing this well requires centering people who have been extracted from and excluded by dominant systems, so this work must center Black people, Indigenous people, and other People of Color (BIPOC), trans people, gender non-conforming people, women, disabled people, working-class people, tenants, houseless people, and other marginalized groups.

I think music and dance are very helpful for well-being, community building, and imagining and embodying better futures. I really appreciate it when space and event organizers do as much as possible to minimize their complicity in gentrification, state violence, health hazards, and other forms of harm (especially those that are additionally harmful to marginalized people). And even better if they are actively working against those harms. I also really appreciate co-operative and community-based spaces and events, spaces and events that help launch people into political action, and events that require payments proportionate to ability to pay and/or other forms of privilege. For example, middle and upper class white people should pay significantly more for paid events than BIPOC and working-class people. Similarly, white people should more often financially support events for and by BIPOC without taking up physical space at the event (unless their presence is requested by the organizers). On another note, cis people (especially gender conforming cis people) should ensure that trans and gender non-conforming people safely travel and attend events. While these are just a few of many examples of how to increase equity, accessibility, and/or safety of events, the possibilities for improvement are as vast as our imaginations.
