New year and we continue where we left off, with more mixes. This time we are proud to introduce you to @protect-thishouse , the co-founder of the sps.collective. His knowledge of a wide range of electronic music is vast and he also has a very good sense of picking the right tunes at the right moment. He proved these skills once again with his nostalgic and harmonious mix for our buffet. Codie Fraley (Protect) is the co-founder of SPS Cxllective; a forward-thinking network of educators, dancers, producers, & creatives alike. Established in 2019, The Cxllective has been spotted dancing almost everywhere in the city of St. Pete. As an event group & aspiring record label, the Cxllective's priority within the dance community is to live out our values of Humility, Harmony, Legacy, Community, Compassion. 

Protect is a dancer, selector, producer. In 2022 he had his debut EP release titled Memori on Cutting Corners Sounds (Brazil). He has forthcoming releases on Strictly Flava & Cxllective. He's also the lead-conspirator of the Minimally Invasive Series, "a deep surgery for your mind".

"I like doing studio mixes with a specific idea in mind. It could be a theme, a color, a feeling, a specific club, or space I am envisioning while putting the tracks together. For this mix, I really wanted to play with energy, and bringing it up and down and back again throughout the mix. It's a bit how I try to DJ an opening set, bridging the gap between dancefloor tracks and experimentation, keeping it interesting without using up all the energy in the room. I believe club nights are a team sport and you need to play your position with pride."

Our landmark 700th episode in partnership with Detroit’s Blueprint presents the first in a new three-part series exploring the untold history of Detroit techno from the perspective of the women who built it.

The history of Detroit techno is often recounted in waves. First there was the Belleville Three—Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May—closely followed by a second cohort of artists who further developed the sound in the '90s. Names like Carl Craig, Octave One, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills and Mike Banks are among those that have been codified in the official annals of techno history.

But there's another, lesser known story that is seldom told about the women who grew the scene right alongside them. Equally esteemed artists like DJ Minx (the founder of Women On Wax Recordings), K-Hand, DJ Cent, Stacey Hotwaxx Hale and more ran labels, collectives and DJ nights that aren't bestowed with the same credit as those from their male counterparts, and have consequently been lost in the chronicles of time. For the 700th episode of the RA Exchange, we counter correct this gender inequity with the first episode of a three-part series hosted and produced by the all-female Detroit collective and party series Blueprint. 

Alanna Greenlee, Janisa Nelson and Crystal Mioner embark on interviews that illuminate an alternative history of Detroit techno that unfurled alongside these better-documented techno waves, tracing the birth of a woman-led community that put mutual support at its heart and fought to earn respect from their male peers and the scene at large. As sunnier days start to peak out, I made a mix that reflects current musical leanings. Started it off with a 12 that I have been dancing around in my room too lately.  Excited to share this with ya! A mix of many tunes and sounds that make me bubble inside <3 . A bit of tropical Italo house digs, free-style, deep Detroit rhythms, disco , ambient textures and more :) . Whoever listens I hope it is a nice journey and adds some light / joy to the sunnier days ahead~ !!!

Our latest SORRYMIX comes via transdisciplinary performance artist, curator, and educator MIRA MIRA (@mirasamira ) 🎶  

Although we only met fairly recently at Honcho Campout, Samira and I are both from the same hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina!! Currently based in Brooklyn, she's also spent a good amount of time in the Pittsburgh underground; co-founding collectives like @dyspheric-x alongside XC-17 (@stephanie-alona-helen) and @yessimusic and Uhaul Disco alongside @johnnyzoloft. Her deejaying is a joy to behold - psychedelic intimacy, passionate + personal, sublimely jacked out improvisational genre-soup flow that I just can't get enough of.

"It was my first time playing at Bossa and I was kinda nervous but also feeling a lot of feelings from the week. I was pulled by cops twice that week, the day before four cops stopped me supposedly for hopping a turnstile, stopped for $2.90... The day of I came in fresh off of a shift at Trans Pecos where I worked a benefit show for Gaza. It featured some powerful performances and a teach-in by DegrowNYC.

Usually, when I'm given opening duties I like to warm things up and keep things a little lighter but I had too much on my heart. I decided that it was more important to speak to what's happening in Gaza, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. I think the mix ended up being a chaotic reflection of what I was feeling. Hopefully it made people reflect with me and wiggle a little bit too."
