Belfast native Carlton Doom — real name Chris Hanna — has long been recognised as one of the most forward thinking, genre-merging artists on the island. Slinging garage and 2-steps out under various monikers - with cosigns from Four Yet, Jamie XX and more - he can be found mixing everything from techno, breaks, jungle and house with no holds barred across Northern Ireland’s rowdiest parties. Today, he dives into dance music history and the sounds of the US with this Dance mania inspired, Ghetto house workout. A ride through the cheeky, sleazy and downright nasty house and acid tracks, this mix is a lot of fun. RIP Paul Johnson.

Carlton Doom will return to Belfast’s AVA Festival for its 7th Edition, taking place 3-4th June on a new location, Titanic Slipways.

"You can't take a sound and exclude the people who created it and say, this is our sound," DJ Noir said in our 2020 feature about Juke Bounce Werk, the label she-cofounded. "No, it's either Chicago footwork or it's other." 

Back then, the Los Angeles-based imprint and crew was still primarily focused around footwork, but Noir and co—including artists like Kush Jones, DJ SWISHA, Surly and Sonic D—have branched out into all sorts of uptempo sounds, touching on house, UK garage, jungle and funk, but always with the fleet-footed approach that makes JBW what it is. "We used to sit down and say, we have to make 160, or we have to keep it footwork and juke," Jones said in that same feature, "but we are also like, if you are strong and developed in another sound, then you should also be free."

Sitting atop this empire of boundary-breaking, innovative dance music is DJ Noir, who is one of LA's best uptempo DJs, or honestly, of any genre. Her sets can be speedy and intense, sure, but it's the way she lets off steam at just the right moments, or gracefully dips into halftime, maybe even a spot of dubstep, that really sets her apart. The LA scene is spoiled to be able to see her DJ quite frequently, but along with the artists she tirelessly promotes and develops with JBW, she deserves a wider, more global spotlight. We hope her RA Podcast might convince you of that, too, an hour of remarkable DJing and skillful blending that connects continents and scenes, from Alix Perez to INVT to Nikki Nair and Bastiengoat. South London’s hidden gem Softi (fka Jazz) takes us down the rabbit hole into a dream-like underworld that weaves between different textural environments. From meditative dub to twisting experimental club music, the mix seamlessly flows through tracks from the likes of Soreab, Kincaid, Cousin, Laughing Ears, and CCL. 

Hosting the Cozi radio shows on Balamii and Rinse FM as well as frequently playing on Kindred, Jazz recently took Cozi into the club sphere. Teaming up with local London promoters Terra Obscura and Local Knowledge, the trio hosted an incredible party at Ormside Projects, booking Kia, Yumi b2b Amelia Holt and GiGi alongside resident with the night starting as a ‘cozy’ ambient/downtempo listening session. The dreamiest programming! 

Launching the Softi moniker with this mix, the dynamic DJ is certainly one to watch. With her soundscape firmly rooted within psychedelic realm, you will be able to catch Softi at the Waterworks E1 afterparty this weekend as well as Or:la’s Phoenix Residency and Corsica Studios in October.
