Children are the true royals: recently plucked from the cosmos, infinitely wise and powerful — they deserve to be treated with the kind of reverence corporate executives like to reserve for themselves in their destructive pursuit of earthly wealth. As I was carrying my 5-year-old child on my shoulders through the hot, humid streets of Jaipur back to our hotel — The Pearl Palace — a joyous melody came washing over me. With this nugget of inspiration, I began to feel the detached, deranged bliss of a child at play. I demo’d the song as soon as we got back in the hotel room, along with two more tunes that eventually
made it on the record. The sentiment made way for joy, for dancing, for awe and schucks and celebrating the rare and precious beauty that is a child in her element. Thanks to the Princess, I got to feeling like a kid again.

Princess of the Pearl Palace

Named for my daughter whose life and death inspired the entire album, this song came to me nearly complete in the days after her miracle birth on February 18, 2018. An astrological reading in Rishikesh the year prior had inspired us to try for another child, but I hadn’t written anything musically related to the experience of our travels through India until she arrived. Suddenly that spiritual energy was
in the room, dancing through the San Francisco apartment we called home, and it hasn’t left me. I wrote song after song, including ‘Letter to Rishikesh’ which bookends the record, in the two short months of her life. The days after her passing were spent in hopeless grief, trying to understand the how and why of
losing a child. But there was no consolation for us in the physical realm - so we turned our ‘eyes’ to the spiritual: our cosmic connection with Rishi. We returned to India to deliver her ashes to the Ganges — and through our sleuthing there, we discovered her power and our part in her greater purpose. That’s where I wrote and demo’d the rest of the music on this record — in Rishikesh, Haridwar, Jaipur, and Pushkar. When I was finally strong enough to get back into a studio, this was the first song attempted. In its construction, Joe and Roberto and myself established a precedent for what the record as a whole would sound like: rich and heavenly in synths, saxophone, and rhythmic textures, but also thrifty, raw and real with plenty of samples from my original demos — a marriage of the sacred and profane, the yin and yang.  There would be no shying away from the heaviness of this song; I had to fully embrace its emotional weight to deliver it. Just as Rishi is so much more than the infant we knew, this music is much more than the notes recorded within its measures.

The long-awaited arrival of ‘Peace Meal’ [Royal Oakie] in 2019 felt like a rebirth, in that the songs are the fruit of a communicative collaboration between this plane of existence and another; stuff of the cosmos that Sweeney has been personally tasked to deliver. Meanwhile, breezy melodies and buoyant beats showcase what was musically Sweeney’s most pop-oriented album to date: “a smorgasbord of influence: there’s Kinks and T. Rex, there’s Mungo Jerry and the smallest touch of Latin vibes; waltzy beats. Above all, the lyrics are clever, kooky and funny and god bless him, they’re interesting... Sweeney writes songs with a connective energy about them. This Sweeney has soul” (TheBayBridged).

With his notebook handy and his microphone on standby, Sweeney is back on the proverbial horse with a 2021 EP ‘Critique of Nature’ featuring his top-streaming song to date in ‘Natural Force’, which was lauded as a “stylish synthpop success” that “hits it out of the park” (Obscure Sound).  Sweeney's 4th full-length album, a dedication to his late daughter Rishi, is slated for release in November 2022, with another LP already in the can for 2023.
