Highlife returns!

For our fourth installment, we turn our focus to the Middle East this time. Presenting a bit more of an early doors tip with Mehmet Aslan making another appearance , serving up a Turkish folk nugget and Tel Aviv's mighty Red Axes delivering an industrial disco gem.

Red Axes - Chew The Gun

Panthera Krause joins the Lobster Theremin stable with a mid-summer trip into the heart of the sun. Drawing on a plethora of classic house influences, Krause weaves these into a style which is a at once recognisable yet uniquely his own, production-wise drawing as much from the MPC-led West Coast beat scene as the European house approach. 

'Rules' kicks off the EP with a serious throwing of the gauntlet.. A slightly shuffled beat being quickly overtaken by a groove-hefty wandering bassline that bobs it's way around a melodic 8-bar refrain, suddenly smothered and smudged by the glowing warmth of sun-tinged pads. Pure summer analogue headiness distilled into 6 minutes of terrace-slaying bliss. 

On the flip, 'Rewo' takes a dusty shakin' drum pattern and filters a cut-throat sampled 'n' filtered piano stab into the mix. All seemingly harmless until the gargantuan sub bass comes rumbling into the fray. Solid lobster pool-party action on a 5* LA hotel rooftop. 

Closing out the EP, and moving things into edits-y territory, is 'Them Flutes'. Although debatable whether there are actually discernible flutes in the track, the final number is built around a looping proto-disco element that steadily evolves while shoving a cattle-prod to the hips when those periodic chords hit.

Those familiar with the world of dub disco and modern Balearica should know all about Layne Fox, a San Francisco-based producer who has released some killer records over the last decade as part of noted collective 40 Thieves.

The Bay Area ensemble has been responsible for some killer records, including gems on Rong Music and Leng, who released their expansive debut album The Sky Is Yours back in 2014.

Now, Fox has decided to go it alone for an outing on Magic Feet that marks his first solo outing since 2005’s Move Me under the Tuffy alias. It’s something of a gem, too, effortlessly combining many of his familiar influences with nods towards druggy Italo-disco and horizontal pop.

Fox delivers two contrasting versions of No Runnin’ Away. There’s a Vocal Mix, where Sunny’s icy, atmospheric voice drifts over a chugging mid-tempo groove built around a Moroder-style bassline, swirling electronics, dreamy chords and metronomic beats. Typically, Fox also provides a tasty Dub, where select vocal snippets drift in an out of a delay and reverb heavy mix that also gives increased prominence to his stretched-out synths and late night electronics.

Magic Feet boss Craig Bratley handles remix duties himself, offering a complimentary but notably different interpretation. His version subtly emphasizes the track’s downbeat pop credentials, pushing the vocal to the fore above a sparse electro groove, dreamy pads and flashes of acid-inspired electronics. Think Cold Wave vibes but with actual production values, not pretend ‘mastered on cassette’. It’s the perfect accompaniment to Fox’s hypnotic, head-in-the-clouds original.

In the spring of 2007, musician and producer Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy decided to launch his own label. Named after the house he grew up in, Claremont 56 would release beautiful music by friends, associates, collaborators and like-minded musicians.

In the 10 years that have passed since, Claremont 56 has more than surpassed Murphy’s modest expectations. It has built up a cult following around the world, with listeners responding positively to the label’s combination of magical music, beautiful artwork, and impeccable packaging.

To mark the label’s first decade, Murphy has put together a sumptuous vinyl box set of previously unheard material, produced and presented with the same attention to detail that listeners have come to expect.

Each copy of Claremont 56: 10 Years contains five weighty slabs of wax and a bespoke info sheet, housed in a specially designed, hand-numbered box with de-embossed logos on the front and rear. There is also a limited-edition run of 200 copies which come with an additional 12” containing exclusive remixes and a brand new Paqua track, ‘Dalas’.

However impressive the packaging, it’s the music that makes Claremont 56: 10 Years stand out. Featuring a mixture of unreleased tracks and brand new remixes of vintage label releases, the highlights come thick and fast.

As you’d expect, some of the most impressive contributions come from those artists you could describe as “legendary”, including Chicago deep house originators Larry Heard and Ron Trent. Can legend Holger Czukay kindly contributes one of the standout moments, the eccentric ‘Music To Be Murdered By’, from his own unreleased catalogue, while Afro-cosmic pioneer Daniele Baldelli joins forces with Marco Dionigi to deliver a typically spacey remix of Bison’s ‘Familiar Stranger’. There’s also an epic, Afro-tinged dub disco remix of Smith & Mudd’s ‘Nether’ by Norwegian scene founder Bjorn Torske.

Elsewhere, Good Timin’ man Jex Opolis turns an overlooked track by Paraiso into a samba-boogie killer, Sean P dubs out Zee Erf’s beautiful cover of ‘Southern Freeez’, and Phil Mison turns FreshRo’s laidback electrofunk cut ‘Pacific State’ into a breezy, Balearic gem. Look out too, for the emotion-rich beauty of Statues’ ‘River Darkness’ – a track arguably worth the cost of the box set on its own – and the deep space explorations of Almunia’s Leo Ceccanti.

We could go on, but we’re running out of space. Suffice to say, Claremont 56: 10 Years is a lovingly compiled, curated and presented celebration of the label’s first decade.

For their third release the Basel centred Fleeting Wax family turn their attention to their chess obsessed buddies, Karpov Not Kasparov. The Bucharest mastermind’s Vocal version of Choose Your Colour Gipsy Dark gets the remix treatment from fellow Romanians Khidja, label boss Mehmet Aslan as well as a special collective effort from the artists behind the label.
The original track was first created for a fashion show during a protest movement in Bucharest and has gone on to become a favourite for those surrounding the Fleeting Wax crew. In the show the models were women from marginalised gypsy communities who donned outfits from well known Romanian designers.
The release adds another layer of poignancy as it brings together again the partnership led to The Mechanical Turk remix which has become an anthem for adventurous DJs worldwide and helped push the heavily eastern influenced sound that is sweeping dancefloors across Europe and beyond.
The three remixes build on the spacey, smokey atmosphere of the original, exploring the trippy influences at it’s heart. Romanian hardware obsessives Khidja turn in a typically jacking, infectious Chicago influenced remix, keeping things heady with the track’s doom laden vocal.
Mehmet Aslan’s chugging remix brings the seductive melodic flavours of the orient to bear once more on the dancefloor with all the coolness and restraint he has become known for. The first ever Fleeting Wax remix is a spacey, Italo inspired reworking based on airy drums and a constant undulating bass line that tempers the drama of the ascending melodies.

After a summer run of scorching sounds and horizontal grooves that were designed for sandy open air scenarios, Hell Yeah kick off 2019 with some more of their curious curveballs and playful party pumpers. It's time to forget what you know and prepare for a weird and wonderful trip into weirdness with Alexander Robotnick: he is the man behind the music and a track that was previously released on the Coast to Coast 12” in 2013 and soon became a Balearic gabba classic.
Now it gets a second spot in the headlines after label head Marco first heard it played years ago by Justin Vandergvolgen and asked him to edit it. It comes backed with dazzling remixes from Prins Thomas, man of the moment Bawrut and Irish outfit The Vendetta Suite who takes things in more of a weird and wonderful direction that the label also deals in.

Alexander Robotnick is a legendary Italian producer who had a big hit in the 80s with ‘Problèmes D'Amour’, produced many bands in the 90s and founded his own Hot Elephant label in the 2000s. From Italo-disco to electro he is a master synth manipulator who can go into new romantic o synth pop territory with an always futuristic vision. The original track on this EP was dropped by the likes of Gerd Janson, Dixon, Jackmaster and Peggy Gou in DJ sets and Boiler Rooms.

It is a playful track with a wild, unhinged lead synth line that burrows deep into your brain. Brightly glowing chords have real warmth and add irresistible colour to the track as they ride up and down the scales and the crisp boom bap drums pack a real dance floor punch.

Scandi-disco maestro Prins Thomas remixes it into brilliantly filthy disco cut with rasping bass and hip swaying drums. It builds the tension over three minutes, locking you in before psychedelic leads burst out of the mix and carry you into the cosmos.

Then it’s the much loved current champ Bawrut, whose old Scuola Furano project label boss Marco was the first to release on vinyl back in the early 2000s on Mantra Vibes. His version is a pumping old school house remix, with analogue bass and that unhinged lead synth line bringing the madness. It's filled with raw energy and will blow up any floor.

Last of all, The Vendetta Suite follows up his Solar Lodge 23 EP on this label in 2017 with a remix that is perfectly dreamy. His rippling synth puddles and sci-fi motifs are brilliantly rich and glowing and fill you with warmth. It's the sort of mind expanding track that leads you into a world of cosmic curveballs and cut from free the real world.

A few years ago, Tito Velcro, Elena Hikari and Rare Wiri founder Rayko joined forces in the studio and produced a handful of decidedly Balearic tracks. Now, having sat on Rayko's hard drive for "a few years", they're finally getting a deserved release courtesy of Citizens of Vice. 

"You're Not Alone" is suitably special, with swirling and evocative vocals from Hikari rising above lazy, laidback guitar riffs, dreamy chords, bubbly beats and soft-touch synth sounds, while 'Unforgettable' is a chugging, slow-motion treat that wraps sparkling synth lines and echoing guitars around echoing beats and low-slung bass. 

Rayko provides a slightly more club-friendly nu-disco take on 'You're Not Alone', while Ilya Santana re-imagines the same track as a sparse, sunrise-ready chunk of Balearic electrofunk.
