As with all the litanies of Imam al-Haddad, al-Wird al-Latif is made up of nothing but the ‘prayers’ of the Prophet-peace be upon him and the formulae that he instructed his community to recite mornings and evenings. It is therefore strictly in conformity with the sunna, and once it is well-rehearsed and becomes regular practice, one can rest assured that he is following the ‘Prophetic’ instructions as to which adhkar he should use to begin and end his day.

Imam Zaid shares his journey and offers his thoughts on the current anti-Muslim political climate in America.

One of Americas most prominent Imam's shares his journey growing up in a segregated south; a youth of political activism and spiritual seeking; serving in the armed forces where he converted to Islam; attaining degrees in Political Science & International Relations; serving an inner city congregation in the middle of the crack epidemic; traveling overseas for nearly a decade to study with some of the world's most prominent Muslim scholars and spiritual masters in Syria & Morocco; then returning after 9/11 to co-found one of America's most prominent Muslim institutions, Zaytuna College.

Zaid Shakir is co-founder and senior faculty member of Zaytuna College and also serves on its Board of Trustees. In 1983, while at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ., he co-founded the New Brunswick Islamic Center formerly Masjid al-Huda. In 1987, he settled in New Haven, CT., and continued his community activism co-founding Masjid Al-Islam. Zaid Shakir moved to Hayward, California to serve as a scholar-in-residence and lecturer at Zaytuna Institute in 2003.  He co-founded the Lighthouse Mosque, Oakland, CA. in 2007. He co-founded Zaytuna College in 2009, where he now teaches Islamic law and history. Zaid Shakir is one of the signatories of A Common Word Between Us and You, an open letter by Islamic scholars to Christian leaders, calling for peace and understanding. Known to the world as Imam Zaid, he has authored numerous articles on a wide range of topics, becoming a voice of conscience for American Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Recently, he was ranked as “one of the western world’s most influential Scholars The 500 Most Influential Muslims, edited by John Esposito and Ibrahim Kalin, (2009).

Here's a little gift for all of you as Ramadan/Ramzan enters my blessed city - Brampton, and the Greater Toronto Area.

This is a 34-minute track of 100 repetitions of the Salat Al Fatih -- one of the most well known and beloved forms of salawat/durud, for sending peace and blessings upon The Prophet (ﷺ).

The purpose for this was manifold -- to assist people in doing a litany (wird) of 100 repetitions while, say, driving, when they are unable to actively keep count; to have a track of blessed remembrance that our babies can fall asleep to; to assist people in memorizing it in home and school settings; etc.

The tune has been based on the Tijani recitation of Salat Al Fatih that I had first heard from my dear friend and awesome poet, Amir Sulaiman.  Also featured on this track is another dear friend, the Muslim Chaplain at the University of Toronto, Sidi Amjad Tarsin.

If this has been done with sincerity, and I hope that it has, then this will insha'Allah find uses among its listeners that I had never expected or anticipated.  I would *love* to hear from all of you as to how you have used this track.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ
الفاتِحِ لِمَا أُغْلِقَ و الخاتِمِ لِمَا سَبَقَ
نَاصِرِ الحَقِّ بَالحَقَّ 
و الهَادِي إلى صِرَاطِكَ المُسْتَقِيمِ 
و عَلَى آلِهِ حَقَّ قَدْرِهِ و مِقْدَارِهِ العَظِيم

O Allāh! Bless our Master Muḥammad 
The opener of what was closed and the seal of what has passed; 
The victor of the truth, by the truth 
and the guide to Your Straight Path, 
and bless his Household as it befits his immense stature and splendour.
