From the Middle East to Central America and Russia, a trio of artists blend their talents. Out of the darkness and into the light, Golan Zocher, Gux Jimenez and Mango build a stratified sonic masterpiece from "Only a Shadow". Subtle organic layers amble through a forest of percussive saplings that sit beneath a towering beat and subterranean groove. Emerging in the dappled moonlit shadows, evocative motifs create an eerie atmosphere before a bassline force springs from the undergrowth and into the open, prowling beneath luscious melody.

Harnessing familiar energies from the darkness, Dowden hypnotises with a new poise and grace. "Only a Shadow" forms in the twilight as white noise crashes in pulsating waves. A mesmerising bassline hits the Toronto streets where it forges a path through pinpricks of melodic light and a seething, rolling rhythmic groove. A pioneering sonic architecture is forged from exquisite St Petersburg and Sao Paulo landscapes. Bassline and synth lines fire off each other in playful interaction and melodic beauty swirls in coruscating patterns of delay and intrigue. "Only a Shadow" is transformed into an iridescent array of sonic colour and uplifting brio by K Loveski and Gorkiz.

A regular on Juicebox Music, DNYO makes yet another return to the imprint with his 2nd solo EP featuring "Halcyon", "Sensoria" and "Space Monk" as our 53rd release. Better known to his friends and family as Danny Oliveira, the São Paulo based artist showcased a different and deeper side of his usual style with his previous tracks - "Radiate" and "Closer Distance", earning a huge wave of praise and admiration within the community. However, it didn't take much for DNYO to steer back into his twisted path and these three tracks perfectly embody what he's notorious for with his genre-bending style - intricate sound design, harmonic complexities and non-linear approach.

"Halcyon" punches through with it's powerful in-your-face drive, supported by a rolling arpeggiated synth-line that constantly shifts in tonality, teasing you into the light, only to draw you back in to the darkness. "Sensoria" embraces a whirlwind of other-worldly bursts of synths stabs on top of a playful percussive groove while "Space Monk" recites a beautiful atmosphere on a funk-inspired bassline, collectively inspired by in the golden era of progressive.

The latest offering from Madloch's Sound Avenue imprint finds the label presenting new interpretations of Nopi's ‘Hookan Idyll'. Originally released in October of 2020 as part of the Ukrainian's well-received ‘Where to Go' EP, it's deeper design and hopeful atmospheres charmed DJs and fans alike, proving once again what an exceptional talent Nopi has become. Now bringing new life to the much-loved track, Sound Avenue invites Forty Cats, Meeting Molly and Pedro Capelossi to re-imagine the production for 2022.

Returning to the label and providing the first interpretation of ‘Hookan Idyll' is Forty Cats. With well over a decade's worth of DJ experience, Russian artist Christina Gavrilova aka Forty Cats has been a fixture of her country's nightlife, sharing the stage with Jody Wisternoff, Nick Warren, Yotto, Dave Seaman and more. Christina's production debut landed three years ago via 8bit Music, and in relatively short order the Russian artist has gone on to release projects via Lane 8's This Never Happened, Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music, Juicebox Music and Mango Alley. Having made her Sound Avenue debut in January with a well-received remix of Eric Lune's ‘Dreaming Home', Forty Cats now makes a welcome return with an equally stunning take on ‘Hookan Idyll'. Smooth and rhythmic throughout, the Russian artist goes deep and driving for what results in a hypnotic eight-minute journey. Meditative lines, gentle tonal themes and intoxicating atmospheres unite across the first act, perfectly setting up an effects-laden break. Acid-like lines and ghostly vocal fragments emerge as the centrepiece evolves, adding a trippy flair as the narrative builds onwards to a thumping drop and colourful finale.

Making his label debut and providing the second interpretation of ‘Hookan Idyll' is Meeting Molly. Following initial outings on Amsterdam based powerhouse Songspire in 2019, Meeting Molly went on to compile a meticulous resume, with notable projects coming courtesy of Juicebox Music, Kiksuya Records, Mango Alley and Monstercat. Now presenting his first remix production of 2022, the Russian artist debuts on Sound Avenue with a gorgeous take on ‘Hookan Idyll'. Engaging from the outset, momentous kicks and rhythmic pulses converge for a fluid foundation, while swirling sonics bring texture and drive to the groove. Building an otherworldly narrative across the first act, hazy synth phrasing and neatly manicured percussion add emotion and drive leading into the break. The centrepiece delights with its timeless appeal, as misty pads add a hopeful charm before transitioning into a key changing drop and haunting finale. Also included is Meeting Molly's ‘Vocal Mix' which carries the same structure and arrangement of the main mix while adding impassioned phrasing for an entirely new dimension.

The release concludes with Pedro Capelossi returning to the label for two spirited renditions of ‘Hookan Idyll'. Born in Brazil but now based in Spain, Pedro Capelossi made his Sound Avenue debut in 2020, with the Madloch and Subnode collaborations ‘Turmeric Latte' and ‘Vanilla Noise'. Forging a strong bond with the label going forward, the Barcelona resident then went on to deliver his first EP for the Belgian imprint in 2021. Also finding a home on Nick Warren's The Soundgarden and Pablo Bolivar's Seven Villas, Pedro now returns to Sound Avenue for his first remix project.

Manu Pavez - Moments [3rd Avenue]

Clubsonica Records continues a strong start to the year by welcoming JFR to the label for his debut EP. Juan Franco Rivero aka JFR hails from Mendoza and has been rising out of Argentina's progressive house underground since making his debut in 2017. 2021 proved to be a breakout year for JFR, as the Argentine continued his upward trajectory with standout releases for UK behemoth Anjunadeep, Dreamers and the fast-rising Nature Rec. World class DJ Hernan Cattaneo has also taken a liking to JFR's sound, featuring the Argentine's music in both his live and radio sets on multiple occasions. Now presenting his first EP project of 2022, JFR adds Clubsonica to his resume with 'Kira | Zulu', alongside remixes from djimboh and Deviu.

'Kira' gets the release underway and sits as one of JFR's most emotive productions to date. Warm beats and a buzzing groove set the foundation for a narrative of gentle stabs, rolling rhythms and detailed percussion. Pushing a poignant storyboard, kaleidoscopic arps rise across the first act, flowing through tasteful modulation while impassioned chord charges and symphonic overlays bring depth and colour leading into the main break. Executed to perfection, the interlude builds anticipation through striking chord stabs and siren-like wails, before melting down to a pulsating drop and smooth finale. The companion piece 'Zulu' finds JFR diversifying his portfolio further with a smooth melodic creation. Sleek and positive throughout, the eight-minute journey delights with its whimsical arps and balmy atmospheres. The narrative then shifts with colourful tones highlighting the main break; glowing and effervescent in equal measure, this newfound theme not only demonstrates what a melodic craftsman JFR has become but sets in motion a glowing musical finale.

The lone interpretation of 'Kira' is provided by djimboh. Hailing from the UK, djimboh first came to our attention in 2019 with releases via Freegrant Music, Immersed and Mango Alley. Quickly regarded for a sound that was both groovy and musical, the London resident continued to impress across the next two years, finding favour with a cross-section of the underground's premiere tastemakers, while adding top tier imprints such as Monstercat and TRYBESof to his resume. Now looking to kickstart his 2022 in style, djimboh debuts on Clubsonica with a gorgeous take on 'Kira'. Opting for a deeper approach, the UK artist makes intelligent use of the primary themes, while incorporating his own, uniquely distinctive quirks. Perhaps most impactful however is the main break, which clocks in at an expansive two-minute running time. Here, djimboh allows glowing tones to resonate against a warm, hazy backdrop, casting a spell over the listener, before breaking out into a tastefully restrained final movement.

The release concludes with Deviu providing the lone interpretation of 'Zulu'. Based in Pasto, the Colombian artist began his journey into electronic music production in 2014 under a variety of alias', before eventually settling on Deviu in 2020. Created as an outlet to explore the realms of deep, progressive and organic house, Deviu soon landed releases on Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, Dopamine White and Purified, where his fresh sound immediately found footing. Now continuing his journey with Clubsonica, the Colombian artist dials in an impressive rendition of 'Zulu'. Building elegantly, its glassy arps and fluttery motifs descend over a warm, voluptuous framework, eventually advancing the journey into an emotive break. Stripping right down, the interlude brings further brilliance to the spirit of the track through charming plucks and heartfelt bass swells, before giving way to a colourful crescendo of drums and effects, which initiate a soaring finale. A gorgeous remix from Deviu which rounds out a welcome Clubsonica debut for himself, djimboh and JFR.

After making his label debut last year remixing Kaspar Tasane's 'Mirrormask' single, Kai Castro now returns on MNL with two strong originals hot on the heels of the release of his song 'Mood Swing' on Manual Music.

Based in Austin, Texas, Kai Castro has a very own unique sound. A sound that is best described as techno music with clear progressive elements, without touching the cliches of the genre. Both songs on this release could be filed under 'underground' and 'timeless' and have a distinctive dark warehouse vibe to them. Music for big sound systems in small rooms with little light. Pure.
