so that's interesting - why where'nt engineers able to figure this out in the 70's

you said earlier about squared off edges being bad on vinyl- yes it struggles with the worm gear to make the correct spacing for the grooves.  For cd you can go louder with limiting, no trouble, so I would think you should use the space available.  So on cd, you are either giving a quieter version than you need to or a vinyl struggling with squared edges.  EDM requires really loud masters (or most of them do) this requires so much level, you wont get there without squaring off.  So two masters both sharing the same eq but different dynamics are required.  I cant see a way round that.  Really good listen apart from this area.

Have you tried a decent "high-end" stylus and turntable? I had no rumble at all and distortion so low it was no issue at all with my last turntable. Regrettably I sold it 16 years ago and last year one went to €9.000,- on eBay...

Well, if you A/B and people subconsciously chooses the vinyl every time. So what if some of the analog "life" is phase-errors from RIAA?

The Billboard Top 50 global singles from the first half of 2024 have an average loudness of -8.3 LUFS

So that’s how loud we should be making our masters, right ?

Well…
