I think this has been one of the most helpful shows in terms of helping us understand and question how we hear things.  The number of times I've spent a long time adjusting compression settings, thinking it's making a subtle but important differences, only to realise I'm altering a plug-in on a different track to what I thought is scary!  Your observation that people find it very difficult to back down from a publicly stated position also rings very true.

i saw this with the introduction of the samsung hd tvs...they set the standard of comparison with their form of cartoonish distortion...once people saw the samsung implementation they dismissed other brands of hd as "not real hd"  ...in effect people learn to associate distortion with quality...however in the sonic world i don't have an aversion to utilizing classics forms of high end console and outboard processing distortion to give your musical product a phycological advantage....bravo great show!!

The Billboard Top 50 global singles from the first half of 2024 have an average loudness of -8.3 LUFS

So that’s how loud we should be making our masters, right ?

Well…
