it seems to me that each generation likes the sound of distortion that the previous generation found unacceptable... from sam phillips to fuzz boxes to  hendrix to bit crushers  to clippers,,etc etc  and onwards...,, if it sound good to the artist.. and listener.. then its good...  great podcast tho...thanks

Thanks for another great podcast.  You always educate, on stuff that is important, so I never tire of continuing my education on the art of sound.  The only issue is that each podcast opens a small door to a whole new universe of knowledge that I need to understand.

Just a quick note to dispel the myth of  "even harmonics = good, odd harmonics = bad": the clarinet timbre is predominantly composed by odd harmonics. For my electronics engineering thesis I read a paper researching why tube/valve distortion sounds "good": the conclusion was that we don't really understand for sure, but even/odd harmonics are not the definitive answer.

So that’s how loud we should be making our masters, right ?
