That's cool to hear. They've still got work to do though. Game trailers on the PS Store vary massively in loudness! There's still some pretty significant differences in some games too, plus livestreams are usually really loud.

Interesting. I used to do the music for games I programmed on the ZX Spectrum, Amiga, Atari ST, and PC back in the 80s. Wrote a beep driver for the Spectrum and created an entire sequencer, too, in assembler. But it was such a relief to move to a machine that had a serious sound chip (Paula on the Amiga, GI AY-38910 on the Atari). [Cue the 3 Yorkshiremen sketch...]

The Billboard Top 50 global singles from the first half of 2024 have an average loudness of -8.3 LUFS

So that’s how loud we should be making our masters, right ?

Well…

It certainly might seem that way, but in reality it’s a bit more complicated than that. This is only one of the interesting results that Ian Stewart presented in his latest blog post for iZoTope, and in this episode I asked him back on to really dig into some of the details and nuance.
