Seems I sort of cobbled this one, but like a shoe ... it probably needs more polishing. Started as a bassline I'd been messing with (randomly over Eftsoons drum track) ... then reimagined the drums to be a little more "mellow".
The most exciting thing in this song is the first thing you hear. A Kalimba or "thumb piano" that I'd received as a gift for x-mas this year. Had been trying to work it into the last track, but this one just seemed to fit better.

Messing around with a beat on the drums (as usual), then got hot dust in my eyes. Seemed like this one called for fretless bass, and it had been a hot minute since I'd played it.

Future note: Guitar parts may someday be added by a technically gifted friend at a future date. For now though the dust swirls without it ...

"Hot Dust" the title for once not coming from Dictonary.com. I'd written this down to remember what the smell of a dusty furnace smells like after not using it all summer. (It's an unpleasant smell.)

Wanted to make something with a percussive drumstick element in the beat (alt-J style). It gets a bit hidden in here, but the guitars made me play them too loudly. It's all their fault.

Sitting on this drum track for about a year...
So I'd decided to put something to it last week. And like always, something way darker than I'd planned emerged. 
Originally, I was thinking ... "this one should have a nice light summer feel to it, ya know? Kind of like a Led Zepplin tune..." 
Then the heatwave cooked my thoughts on high heat last week and that turned to, "I wonder what the sun would sound like? ... Cue the bass guitar up way too loud and grindy.

Fun fact: I've not settled on if I like it in here, but the rolling weird guitar solo that drifts in is actually running in reverse. So not back to front, but each 4-count runs backward within itself ... which made for something I could never play in real life.

A dark and mysterious form has entered your life tonight. Too blurry to be defined ... its song was intended to make you question reality. Part smoke, part sticks ... it's your newest friend... or is it, friendly?

Mystery aside,  this was a song "crafted" on a new guitar(Baritone Gretsch) tuned down to "A". No bass guitar in the entire song, so you know it's looooow.

The Gretscher

Finally getting something made and posted this year! This song started on the drums (which went quick) then I added bass and guitar parts (both of which were played on the new Baritone Gretsch).

Thrawn meaning: Twisted / Crooked
(seemed to match the song feel)

Thrawn

Definitely the most ambitious (and tedious) song I've attempted to learn/record so far. Stumbled on it early summer and thought it would be a good selection for this year's Halloween creation!

Spent the time on this one to lay out all the parts "properly". Quickly realizing that I was no match for the breakneck 163 bpm guitar chord elements, I slowed the song to 140 bpm and now really liked the slower vibe. Hearing the original it sounds VERY fast to me now. lol.

All parts were played by me, and there are even some creepy keys in there that I got to figure out just for this track.

One Way or Another

1W0A - One Way or Another (Blondie Cover)

I tend to always want these to be instrumental, so thought I'd drop this one on here in case others wanted to hear it sans vocal.

Probably a testament to my lack of mastering / production skills, but wo/ vocal all of the instruments sound clearer in the mix. I guess that makes sense.

1W0A - One Way or Another - Instrumental (Blondie Cover)

"Hmm... not sure." Was the answer to the question of what this song sounds like. That's about right I thnk. lol.

Another song with no point that fits my typical mold of ending before you can really figure out if you even like it. Hence the name "Whinge" ... meaning; to complain, or whine about something.

Feel free to whinge about this one, better than the typical crickets and tumbleweeds.

P.s. Weird process on this one. Bassline was built to go with a different placeholder beat that was "generated" on accident (complex story). Then riffed on some guitar parts and couldn't decide on a direction so you get the beginning / middle / end rando style sandwich. Then played about 30+ takes of different varying beats over the top of that. The drums that made it in were played as one take straight through the song ... so that might be a first. 

Whinge

Moon dusting off a song that I'd finished more than a year back, and for one reason or another didn't get posted.

Not many stay mellow but this one kinda did. More open "space" in this slow-building tune ... one part float, one part build, one part tanked bass from space.

Parse

Commissioned by Dakine for the launch of their "Fear The Known" brand video. The video went out to all Dakine accounts and social platforms in 2018. Directed by Tyler Malay, we landed on this bass-forward sound, and intentionally built in the "fall apart" ending.

Messing around with harmonics on my guitar, this song was born. Appeared in a video I'd edited to commemorate the 2018 Mt. Baker LBS.

Sort of the sketch for a song that wants to be at least twice as long. Intentionally weird timing in here, that was a fun challenge to play within. Also went light on the bass effects this time, kinda digging the cleaner vibes. Tail end has 3 tracks of Bass guitar (no guitar) ... might be my new thing. Enjoy.

Dim Sumn

Had this random thought the other day, "I wonder how hard the Knight Rider theme song is ..."  While this is not quite it, it does bear a resemblance. Playing a Uke (first for anything I've made), Acoustic guitar, bass, and some synth in there as well. I wanted to take the drums way further, but keeping it simple for this short build.
This show was a major influence in my youth ... K.I.T.T. was the coolest thing ever back then. #selfdrivingvehicles
