The Serpentarius Arcana is a concept album exploring themes of mysticism, balance and ambivalence.

Serpentarius, the constellation of the Serpent Bearer, depicts a man holding a snake. A careful balancing act between life and death, between the regenerative molting of its skin and the venomous threat of its bite. A reminder how quickly our world can tumble over the edge, from the light of the stars to the abyss of the void.

To maintain balance, we seek guidance In the revelations of the Zodiac and Tarot cards, past and future merge in riddles to be solved. In cultural artifacts, virtual worlds and alternate lives help us understand our own melancholy fate as mortals.

Let us collect our memories this evening. While the night is still young, we draw cards from the Major Arcana and begin the readings.
Eight cards bring answers from Seven worlds, all keyed by the One Master card: the Serpentarius Arcana. The Serpentarius shows how opposites are in a continuum, the nuances and shades at play in night and day.

The oracles offer answers...provided we ask the right questions.

A Traveler wanders through the ruins of a bygone society, its survivors recounting the story of their demise, embittered by wars for power and obsessions for building ever higher, greater monuments. Such is the fate of civilization - unless we can heed the warnings of those who came before, uphold strong institutions to keep our darker instincts in check, and realize we are part of a cycle that goes beyond us, mere grains of sand on the tapestry of life.

(6:00) Retour sur l’épisode no. 1 au sujet de Dear Esther comme oeuvre innovatrice dont la proposition ludique minimale est posée comme emblématique de ce nouveau genre qu’est le walking simulator.

(16:28) Retour sur l’épisode no. 2 portant sur l’étude des discours et de la réception controversée du genre. Réponse aux questions sur l’importance du régime de vision à la première personne, sur le sujet de la non-violence comme critère générique et sur la connotation péjorative et l’appropriation de l’étiquette « walking simulator ».

(43:51) Retour sur l’épisode no. 3 s’appuyant sur l’étude de The Stanley Parable afin de réfléchir à l’identité et à l’habitus du gamer que le walking simulator vient ébranler dans le contexte de la culture vidéoludique contemporaine. D’une part, l’idée que l’excavation minutieuse du passé dans les walkings simulators puisse transformer les non-lieux en lieu (ou en demi-lieu). D’autre part, au sujet des affinités du genre avec les courants naturalistes et romantiques en peinture.

(1:22:36) Retour sur l’épisode no. 5 concernant le progressisme de Tacoma et la performance de genre non-masculinisée que le jeu met de l’avant.

(1 :32:13) Retour sur l’épisode no. 6 abordant le pont entre la musicalité et le passage du temps dans Proteus. Précisions sur le statut ambigu du jeu comme objet sonore ainsi que sur le rôle flou qu’assure le joueur vis-à-vis l’émergence de la musique dans l’oeuvre.

(1:55:51) Réflexion sur une intervention du public à propos des plaisirs qui sont promus par le walking simulator. Quelle attitude ludique est-elle sollicitée dans un walking simulator? Qu’est-ce que « jouer » dans ce genre vidéoludique si minimaliste?

Peut-on s’attendre prochainement à des formes de recyclage ou de récupération commerciale? Comment les figures esthétiques iconiques du genre sont-elles susceptibles de se disséminer ailleurs?

(2:54:10) Question d’ouverture sur les partages génériques entre le walking simulator et le jeu d’horreur. En reconnaissant les principaux points de convergence et de divergence entre les deux genres, nous annonçons les tenants et aboutissants de notre deuxième saison. Cette dernière traitera de la circulation des effets génériques propres au « walking simulator » à travers d’autres genres vidéoludiques, d’autres objets artistiques et d’autres types d’expériences culturelles.

(3:00:03) Au terme de ce profil générique du walking simulator, la question du minimalisme vidéoludique est abordée comme caractère significatif du genre. Son mouvement de réduction formel est envisagé comme susceptible de dynamiser un raisonnement méta-réflexif sur les jeux vidéo, les genres, les conventions, les habitudes de jouabilité, les identités culturelles, les préférences vidéoludiques d’une communauté, etc.

S01E08 - Réinterroger le minimalisme du walking simulator

(00:00): Présentation des objectifs analytiques de la saison 2 qui portera sur la pragmatique des effets génériques du walking simulator à travers ses hybridations. 

(12:14): Profil ludique du jeu d’objets cachés. Portrait de ses principaux aspects contextuels, thématiques et expérientielles.

(43:24): Parallèles entre les caractéristiques du jeu d’objets cachés et du walking simulator. La notion d’incertitude perceptuelle proposée par Greg Costikyan (2013) est employée afin d’étudier des traces du jeu d’objets cachés à travers d’autres genres vidéoludiques. 

(1:30:26): Réflexions théoriques sur la performance perceptuelle dans le jeu vidéo. Le design des défis et des mécaniques propres au jeu d’objets cachés sert de point de comparaison pour cerner la part de jeu dans le walking simulator.

S02E01 - Où est Esther ? Le jeu caché du ​walking simulator

(0:00) : Contextualisation des enjeux de l’épisode qui porte sur l’expérience de jeu “documentarisante” proposée par Discovery Tour by Assassin’s Creed: Ancient Egypt (Ubisoft Montréal, 2018). 

(9:27): Présentation des théories de la sémio-pragmatique de Roger Odin (2000) développées en études cinématographiques. Les tenants et aboutissants de la notion de “lecture documentarisante” sont exposés dans le détail.

(23:10): Présentation descriptive de la création d’Ubisoft. Nous analysons ensuite plusieurs "énoncés de vérité" à valeur historique qui dans cette oeuvre instituent ce que nous conceptualisons sous l’expression de “jouabilité documentarisante”. À ce titre, nous abordons la voix over du narrateur, les animations de personnages, la mécanique de prise de photo et le recours à des images photographiques d’archives. En dernier lieu, nous évaluons l’intégration des énoncés de fiction tissés à travers le discours historique de Discovery Tour.

(52:06): Afin d'approfondir notre problématique, nous convoquons un article scientifique de Cindy Poremba (2007) qui porte sur les relations entre la photographie et le jeu vidéo. Il est question des principaux contextes de la photographie, des fonctions canoniques du médium et des questions post-modernistes rattachées à la construction du réel par les processus photographiques. En nous appuyant sur les conclusions de Poremba, nous réinterrogeons le rôle complexe de la photo dans Discovery Tour ainsi que ses impacts sur la jouabilité documentarisante.

(1:35:03): Les éclairages apportés par les analyses précédentes sont réappropriés afin de raisonner les figures esthétiques et les mécaniques liés à la photographie qui jalonnent l’expérience du walking simulator. En dernier lieu, nous nous référons au concept de “lecture à l’authenticité” (Odin, 2000) pour théoriser un mode de jouabilité propre à ce genre vidéoludique. Cette conclusion est l’occasion de cristalliser deux effets génériques iconiques du walking sim: les effets d’authenticité et d’auteurialité.
