Threatened Skies - Part 1

In the not so distant future, hope for humanity lies dwindling as the spread of industry envelopes the Earth. The robot factories have now covered over 75% of the Earths surface, while the skies have shifted from a bright blue, to a dense layer of dark greys and reds.

Through the thick, burning air, one man stands alone against the threat to his home. His name is Carltron9000, and with him he brings a new light. A light in the form of the ultimate computer virus which systematically converts all PLC/ICS and hybrid robotic instruction into Famitracker chiptune code. Once the code is injected, the world will resonate as the very robots who seek to terminate our existence, one by one, begin to start arranging the chaotic musical code into organized works of stunning complexity, and to our biggest surprise, songs of such magnitude and beauty that most of the world still refuses to believe the robots are actually responsible.

Now, as the planets life runs dry, our only hope lies with CT9x to pen. the FAMIcore and find out for himself the true nature of this remarkable phenomenon. Are the robots slowly being converted one by one, by the power of chiptune, only to form an uprising against the oppressive industrial central AI? Deep within the metallic corridors of Robot City lies the underbelly of the AI core. Here, our fearless hero will search out the robot chipists and attempt to make first contact in the hopes of jamming out the sweetest chips; uniting all lifeforms through music and replenishing the once rich sky with the bluest of all blues and freshest of all human/machine fusion chip music!

My entry for Chiptunes=WIN "Spacetunes=WIN" compilation which I'm thrilled to be a part of! The order of magnitude of epic music on this comp is of interstellar gravitational force! Thank you Chiptunes=WIN team and fellow artists for this super cosmic album!!

I wanted to explore a track that had a drum & bass feel to it while giving a sense of outer space which is cold, sterile but wondrous and beautiful. I decided on the use of frequency modulation synthesis as a core part of the instrumentation for its somewhat cold, digital, metallic sound and tone that it's known for.

I achieved this by using software synths such as ALYJAMES LAB's wonderful FMDrive based on the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive YM2612 FM sound chip. I also utilized the emulation of this chip through Deflemask using the Sega Genesis engine to make samples. NES 2A03 chip pulse channel was used via Famitracker. I also used Native Instruments FM8 VST. I pulled some fat bass out of the QuadraSID VST emulating the Commodore 64's MOS Technology 6581 SID (Sound Interface Device)chip. FMDrives Shinobi patch was used for bass as well.

On the flip side of FM, I always like to bring some element of fusion into my tracks so I decided on adding some analog warmth since outer space is freezing cold but also full of extremely hot things like stars! For this, I chose Oberheim OB-X emulation via sonicprojects OP-X PRO-II virtual analog VST for the pad chords derived from the OB's "Drifting Strings" patch. 

On top of that I used my typical method for tracking leads with single cycle waveforms; in this case, PWM and square waves. Other melodic lines and effects via sine and sawtooth waves. The Drums were created using samples from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters and Street Fighter 2 as well as Stagg DH hi-hat samples. 

All of this was sequenced or "tracked" within Renoise V3.1.1 which is my tracker of choice these days when I'm not using Fami/Defle/Schism or other various trackers. Basically this all adds up to an 80s/90s feel with drum & bass and demoscene elements. Hopefully I achieved my goal of creating a outer space themed atmospheric / high-energy, exciting track!
